People:5 Donegal Bay SAC

Duration:2pm to 5pm

Tide:Flooding

Weather:Mild, light south west

Bait:Lug and mack

Rigs:Flappers

Results:Nowt

Report:Poor days fishing with only one counting fish, flounder of 30cm, winning the leg. Few other undersize flounder and turbot. I didn't get a bite the whole day which has been a recurrent theme of my trips of late...

The results from matches in the NW seems to be getting poorer year on year. I'd say if you put a NW club on a beach where there are actually any fish left, they'd clean up.....or die of shock.....

You'd be surprised how boring scenery gets after 5 hours watching your rod tip not move against the backdrop....

I have to agree it makes a great backdrop for a pic...if you get a fish to photograph.

Good for the soul and all that, after all, beats the minibus edition of Eastenders on a Sunday afternoon :D

Only slagging lads, have spent more thatn my fair share of time blanking on beaches in Donegal, I know what its like....roll on the summer!

Would there have been a bigger registered catch if a 20cm or even 25cm limit was used ?

We work to a 20cm minimum size for many species. So unless we went below that there's no way to up the number of counters caught. I tend to use a size 2 or occasionally a size 4, but generally tend towards the larger hook size to avoid meeting non-conters. I figure there's no point in dropping the hook size on the off chance of hitting a counter and damaging a pile of juvenile fish in the process. Stocks are bad enough as it is.....

In an ideal world I'd like to see the minimum size set at 25cm for most species but if we did that, whole clubs would blank in competitions, instead of about half of them on any given day.

It's sad that we're already down to scratching for tiddlers off the beaches. What's next?

Less of the guff Petekd! Donegal Bay SAC use the 25cm limit for all their club comps at the moment. If it was 20cm then there definetly would be a rise in counters, nothing spectacular though.
