Out board engine for a Dinghy
I just bought myself a 310 dinghy and thought i'll get a small out board engine for it but its proving hard to find one at the right price. This is my first small boat so its a bit of a learning curve for me, Anyone out there have one or can you put me in the right direction as to where to get one, is it just Done deal and Adverts????????????????

Yep! Done Deal, Adverts maybe ApolloDuck...
You could call int your local dealer see if they have anything in stock... Sometimes short shaft engines can be difficult to come by.
What HP are you looking for?

I'm not sure,........................... from the videos on UTube it seems something around 6HP give or take a few HP, but not sure, i only have a few hundred to spend so it won't be a new engine. I'll keep looking at Done Deal, Adverts maybe ApolloDuck hopefully something will come up that won't break the bankJimC wrote:Yep! Done Deal, Adverts maybe ApolloDuck...

i'm not sure whats best, i was advised that slightly more HP is better than slightly less, so i think 6HP give or take a few HP.

Re: Out board engine for a Dinghy
i know you said you only have a few hundred to spend but it might be wise to sit tight and spend sensibly off a dealer ....you said you are new to boating so at least a dealer won`t put one over you hopefully
...my friend...as you will soon realize boats and engines are a money drain!

Re: Out board engine for a Dinghy
Keep a good eye on done deal as small outboard come up on it, but if you decide to buy make sure you have your homework done and request the serial number and year made on it and get the guards to run a search on pulse to see if its reported stolen, also DO NOT buy till you see it running and what the water pressure is like on the discharge end, if its strong OK,if its weak DONT BUY as the impeller or pump or both are goosed.
If you cant get anyone to go check it that knows about them also bring a plug spanner and good torch and check the piston heads to see if there is any obvious pitting on them, if there is DONT BUY, also take a good look at the prop and the skeg and check for any damage as this will indicate if it has a lot of work done and being driven over rocks.

Re: Out board engine for a Dinghy
With your budget,I'd say go for 8hp Yamaha or mariner 1980s two stroke.great engines and simple to operate and not too heavy on juice .you should be able to get one cheap enough.
