#1 Post by Jonny »

Arrived at the pier at the far end of the town about 19:30 .It was a lovely calm night low tide and not a sinner about.Picked up 2 Pollock and 2 good sized codling all on mackerel bait.Had to leave about 21:20. (could have stayed all night)

Even better if you have more time to spend.

I see you done quite well at the casting day last month i`ll maybe pop down to the Dee at some stage for a few pointers.

Maybe catch you some other time.

I usually fish off the left hand side of the pier about 40 yards out casting slightly left of Strangford. The weed well what can i say if it doesn't get you on the bottom the tide is sure to bring it your way.I use about a 20lb main line and fish 1-2 hooks about 4ft from the weight.

I fish a Gentle Lob up towards the Boats off Portaferry Pier, Grounds doesn't seem to be as bad, Holds of Good Coalies and Dogs, and like everywhere else this year a Plague of Mini Codling, saying that, They go to over 1lb, Which is nice. 8)

Mackers

i would normally fish in portaferry at night, normally a friday or saturday night.i had been going almost every week for months but the last few times i was there i found there to be very little in the way of fish.as for doggies i have not caught 1 here in about 2 1/2 years now....don't know what i am doing wrong.i fish the lower pier (fishermans pier) althought i have spoke to a couple of guys that have fished the one nearest the ferry and they say there is a few fish about....it's been a couple of weeks now since i've been down and starting to get withdrawl symptoms...will have to try to get down this weekend for a bashing....i normally use a rig with a main line of about 30-40 lb with snoods of 15-20lb with a 3oz weight.i think it take a heavy main line for it is very weedy.i would try to keep fishing off the front of the pier but always end up trying of the side of it (just incase i am missing something),but would find most of the fish in very close......the latest thing i've found works there is cooked mussels-yes cooked.they are a bit hard to keep on the hook, but add a bit of mackrel to keep it on and your rod won't sit still.....may see a few of you there soon,, :) ,,very soon,,, :D ,,,very very soon. :P stuff it deffo this week end for sure.....

I am thinking of a trip down to fish portaferry, but I haven't got a clue where to fish.
This pier you all talk about, is it the one the ferry leaves from ?
What are the currents there like ?

If you get down onto the Seafont at Portaferry, turn left, Keep going til you see an L Shaped Pier with a couple of Fishing boats tied to it. Fish there.
