East Coast 19/4/15

#1 Post by guernica84 »

People: Me, BiL, FGD
Date: Sun 19th April
Time: 5:30pm - 12:30am, LT 6:30pm
Baits: lug, herring, crab, white rag
Rigs: 3U clipped 1/0, pulley pennell 3/0

Got to the beach an hour before LT, knowing that we had a couple of hours to kill before we saw any action. Decided to top-up on our supply of luggies to pass the interim time so we set up and went digging for the best part of an hr, returning to 6 fishless rods as expected.

The anticipated uplift in action as the tide started to push up the beach didn't seem to be materialising as rods stayed motionless for several hours. At maybe 9pm, pretty bored and looking round at my 2 comrades having a bait meeting at the BiL's peg, I suddenly saw FGD sprint for his rod, with his pal in hot pursuit. "B**t**d doggie" I thought.

Having little else to occupy me, I went with it and made for FGD's peg. By the time I got there, I could see from the well bred lad's toil that this was no wee sharkie. It was especially evident given the bend on his borrowed Ron Thompson rod that's stiff as a poker. Now might be a good time to add that this was FGD's 2nd ever foray into the domain of beach angling.

BiL went into the surf to assist with the landing and before my eyes I saw that propitious glint that we all crave. Rather ineptly, BiL slid a lovely bar of silver onto the sand. Went 59cm, 4 lbs 2 ozs in auld money. Going to unhook it, the hook fell out of the fish's mouth as he touched it.

More of the same for the next 90 mins or so (i.e. beggar all) and just as dark descended and I had missed my own slack-liner whilst retreating up the beach from the advancing tide, the shout came from up the beach to say FGD had landed another, 50cm, 3 lbs. Beginner's luck or what????

As the tide topped out, we all began to hit pin flounder and the odd slugling. Myself and BiL fished really hard until the bitter end, sacrificing every last luggie in our buckets but to no avail. Sometimes it's just about doing everything you possibly can and at least being able to attribute failure to the absence of that tiny morsel of luck eh.

I've had a couple of other recent sessions since my last post and will get around to writing them up before long I hope.
