Horrifying. I think i remember that area is where mack shoals overwinter before heading north again in spring, and the protection came in decades ago after Scottish trawlers almost cleaned it out (and sold their catches for peanuts to Russia to be used as fertiliser...). The humble mack may not be an exalted angling fish like the holy bass, but it's a vital foundation species that must be fiercely protected. This isnt the way.

The worrying thing for us is that around a dozen Dutch brutes the same size or bigger spend 6 months a year off our west coast

the sad thing that most people dont realise is that mackerel are the slowest growing fish a 1lb mac is approx. 11yrs old.slower even than bass.they only survive because they breed in such huge numbers.
common sense not very common

Amazing. And Wikipedia confirms what you say: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackerel:greg wrote:the sad thing that most people dont realise is that mackerel are the slowest growing fish a 1lb mac is approx. 11yrs old.slower even than bass.they only survive because they breed in such huge numbers.
I always assumed they were a short-cycle species, I'll show them even more respect now....
