Right...

Belmullet it is, fishing up and down from high water around 1-2 pm, and trying a new set of marks at Duveel. For the uninitiated its the peninsula on the Mayo side of Blind Harbour. I've done my research and it offers a very wide mix of conditions - from rocks to sand, from shallow to very deep, with a couple of very sheltered gullies where we can do a bit of mini species hunting if we're very bored...

Access is a bit of a slog - drove up there before to check out a beach - but there is a farmer's green road up most of the way, not sure the new car will enjoy it but what the hell. Good boots required and it being Mayo in March, sun block and waterproofs recommended.

if anyone is interested in joining us, weather looks set fair, light winds southerly veering south east, relatively small swell so should be able to fish both sides of the peninsula, and been told to expect flats and dogs, with coalfish congers and early wrasse in the weeds.

Would kill for some ragworm or fresh lugworm, have most other frozen baits ready including stinky black lug for any dabs.

Will be hoping for turbot or even a ray, who knows... wish me lucky as its awful early to be doing this!

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

I'm not bothering to post a report... which says it all really! :?

The culprit was the "new" car, well new to me, which has far lower clearance than the Zafira. This suggests that I'm driving a Ferrari but its actually a Peugeot 308 SW, and all I can say is I have no idea how I didn't leave the gear box transmission half the chassis and all of the exhaust system on the "green" road I had intended taking up there! A disaster that does not show up on Google Earth!

Ended up reversing back and heading for Ballyglass harbour, which is now so stuffed with crab and lobster pots you can not safely fish off the end of the pier. We got down into the rocks and with the wind fresher than I expected and in the S, we have wind versus tide which wasn't idea. The upshot was a few small coalfish, a single dab and half a dozen dogs from a few hours trying various methods in and around the rocks. I missed one decent fish, probably a coalie, when spinning with a new lure. No Wrasse. No Pollack. No Rays.

Gave up shortly after 3 pm as we were in shadow it was damn chill with the wind.

Still, I now know how I have to get there - a yomp - so with another decent break in the weather, I will head back...
