Hard Plastic Lures For Seatrout

Hi Lads, any preferences for hard plastic lures for seatrout in Easturies. I have been considering this kind. Lucky craft wander 60 and 80 and changing the trebles for singles. Any thoughts/advice greatly appreciated.

Phone them up and have a chat about Smith lures, especially the Troutin' Surger range. They'll suggest a couple of others that are equally deadly. Budget about €70-€80 to be on the safe side.

That Troutin Surger was my second choice tanglerat. Crackin lookin little lure.

Wanders are my top choice for HB,s, but dont neglect casting jigs, especially if you're prospecting estuaries with strong currents. Also check out the smith cherry blood and the wander in 70 MS American shad and the surger 60 in laser rainbow trout

Regarding casting jigs, Quantum Mahi and Maria Little bit rule.

As Tanglerat mentions, Pat in Henrys is your man, but I'd double that budget to cover all bases

If we're bringing in metals (Quantum Mahi is excellent) then the best I've ever used if the 20g Flashmer.

Thanks for the advice lads. I will definitely be grabbing some smith lures and a wander or 2. It looks as though i will need a lighter rod too as i dont think my palms shoregun will cast these lighter lures very well. Any advice on how to fish the Smith Troutin Surger?

All of the above lures are excellent for sea trout and have caught fish for me this year, with the wander probably the best of them.

Having said that, if I could only use one lure for sea trout it would be a 7g daiwa prisoner. Fantastic ST lure.

You're right about your Palms being a little overkill for these type of lures, and I'd also look to reduce the b/s of your braid. 10lb braid is more than enough for ST.

Don't write off the trusted Abu krill small and the Abu Toby blue and silver 8g too - plus a little teaser fly ahead of the lure on a dropper can 'sometimes' prove popular

The 'thing' with the surger is sometimes the drop...

I arrived one day to an estuary on the west coast in Spring 2006. Armed with the latest Japanese steel, kevlar and carbon, the trout lay at my mercy. I felt like a pioneer, a spaceman in my breathables and goretex. Surely the fish would fall to the technique, the sheer beauty, entranced by the latest micro lure wiggle...

Three hours later (fishless) I met a man with 'industrial equipment' - 18lbs mono, an old abu cardinal, and a very old Shakey spinning rod with eyes missing - he also had two fat ST's - he fished an Abu Toby the one with orange fins - the one I was reared on!

When watching this video, you'll notice that you don't see the pause on retrieve. You'd probably need to buy the dvd to see it, but...you will definitely notice the trout chasing but not committing. It is then, the pause, or drop, causes a reactionary take. Confirming to the trout that lure is "real", taking evasive action. Keep this mental image when fishing next time and use the force to sense the follow

Great to see the good ol' white Hansen Stripper in action.

Anything that breaks up the steady retrieve works. Whether its the pause/drop or alternatively a steady retrieve interspersed by sharp twitches seems to spark the fish to hit the lure. Sharp twitching worked an absolute treat in Kerry earlier this year, ST were absolutely nailing the lures after the first twitch.

The Danish call it 'the spin stop'.

Retrieve as normal & every ten turns or so of the reel handle stop for just a second or two & then carry on the retrieve & repeat.

It's worth watching the DVD's though as they are full of useful tips.

As well as the above mentioned lures which are all sea trout killers consider the smaller Smith Troutin Surger 40 or the Smith Shirasu Minnow when the sea trout are being fussy.
