Waterford - Eels

Lads, how would you go about catching eels in the Suir estuary, heard they are caught between Waterford and Cheekpoint and exported to Holland. I've used lugs, crabs, mackerel strips, mussels, caught whiting, codling and flats but never any eels. Any suggestions, season, bait, location? Thanks a million

I agree,

Darkness is the big factor. If your on a pier or harbour wall, don't even chuck out, drop it down the side, they'll find it. I would be happy enough to use crab or any fish bait, I would never use worms, in fact old rotten chicken or bacon rind is as good as anything.

Make sure your hooks are small enough size 2 or 4 Kanasan are good but make sure you watch your rod tip and act quick, strike and get them in without stopping, if they are lying on they'll make a right mess of your rig.

Horrible things, but better than Coronation St :lol: :lol:

btw...Fantastic bait for Tope, cut into 4" or 6" lengths, can be deadly.

Peeler crab claw can be deadly aswell. Great Pike bait too. (Not the claws!)

I'll never forget how as kids we used to catch eels from the sewer outlet into the Slaney in Enniscorthy. We then used to beat the daylights out of them till they stopped moving by practising the overhead lob against the train tunnel wall. When they stopped moving we used to put them on the tracks and wait for the train to squish them into oblivion. :oops: :oops: :oops: :oops: :oops: :oops:

Same thing happened in Ferrycarrig. In fact you could even catch decent bass there ate one time too....

The Bass were good in Ferrycarraig - big difference now I'll agree. Tried it out since I got back from the UK about 6 times caught nothing but crabs. The place has gone to pot. You would have thought with that amount of crabs the bass would be all over the place. Mind you I suppose the bassfest off wexford bridge is killing all areas up the river.

My very first catch was an eel from the river Tyne (NE England) my uncle told me how to catch them with a hand-line, that was self made out of sturdy thread wrapped around a tin can.

from waterford city to around woodstown youll catch eels in season. The eels i have caught were on crab size 1/0 hooks if i remember correctly

Bass fishing in ferrycarrig was great at one time i used to fish just up past heritage center about a qtr of a mile you could park car there and it was a great spot untill sopmw one dumped a load of dead fish there
