southwest cork tuesday afternoon
People: myself
Duration: 4.30-7.30
Tide: 1hr after low
Weather: cloudy and showery
Bait: lug
Rigs: running ledger
Results: 1st gilt head
Report:
i had heard on the grapevine that a few of these fish were being caught down this way so i decided to have a go at them
myself . got some advice from dan at halfway as to rig set up , set of at three pm to dig some lug and bumped into
two lads from the uk who i met last year on the beach ,so i had chat with them and told them i was going after the
bream, only for them to tell me they had fished this beach in the morning and only caught a few flounder,
which didn't fill me with much confidence so i decided to just give it a go.
arrived at the beach around 4.15 just starting to rain, as i got to my spot i could see loads of gannets diving and sea
trout jumping all over the place some looked very decent size as well so i tackled up and cast out about 30ft into 6ft
of water after about 50 mins hid my first pull ,strike, (s*** missed) re baited cast back in 30 mins later 2nd pull xxxx
missed again so cast in again 30 mins later third pull so i just held the line in my fingers for a few seconds and i could
feel a gentle pull so struck i was on this time line ripped of the reel as i had set the clutch lightly as i was only using8lb
flourocarbon i thought it was a bass at first until it came to the top then i could see it was my first gilt head, what a great
scrap it put up , got it on the sand and unhooked it took its picky then returned it for another day. guess weight around
2.5 lb . happy as muck cast back in again left it another 30 mins then wound in to rebait only to find the smallest
flounder ever had swallowed the hook so sorted him out then called it a day can't wait to try again on friday eve.
