rod for smoothhounds

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

rod for smoothhounds

#1 Post by ian 123 »

Hi guys I'm looking to pick up a new rod for smoothies but not too sure where to start. I will be fishing clean and mixed ground. Need a rod that handles weed well too. Rod needs to be setup for fixed spool as well. Looking to spend 200-400. Any helps appreciated!

Any 5 to 6oz beach caster will do the job there is no need to go heavy.

Agree with Shane most of the marks around wexford /wicklow where they turn up are fairly clean ground dont think theirs much need for heavy gear.

Having nearly lost two rods and reels to smoothie runs, personally I'd pay more attention to the reel! Either a multi with a ratchet or a FS with a baitrunner option (I use Shimano XTAs and they are good - you can go from freespool to a fully engaged drag with a quarter turn of the drag knob).

Thanks for the advice lads. Iv ordered myself a Afaw 6 plus bait because I needed a new rod either way. I'm currently using a biomaster xta reel and its fantastic for what I need
