Duncannon, wexford 10/04/14

#1 Post by corbyeire »

People: me and fmd

Duration: 19.30 to 22.30

Tide: low 22.00

Weather: breezy from NW

Bait: crab razor lug mac, whiting

Rigs: flappers and pulleys

Results: whiting fest and 2 flounder

Report: not much to report just bait robbing whiting - cleaning 2/0 pennells and swallowing 2 size 6s in a go - not much fun - all 15-25 cm in size - just about a bit of interest with 3 bigger lads on - but then you know in your heart of hearts its going to be another 3 of them when it breaks the water!

any bait was gone - including a bit of canabalism

one question i do have is a lot of them appear to have cod worm on the gills
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diseases_a ... tes_in_cod

or other parasites, with large growths at the back of the mouth/gills

many others finding that on the waterford estuary - or in general?

Sounds like the dreaded white-out kept ya busy, good to get out though.
Them parasites look nasty, that's Wexford Whiting off the menu from now on.

Might be worth freezing down an infected fish and getting it to the Dept of Marine.

Lernaeocera branchialis. Seen a lot of them in whiting from Teelin over the years, horrible looking things.

Back in the early nineties, every whiting that was caught off the Wicklow beaches were infested with those. Haven't seen them in a while, then again, haven't seen a decent Whiting in a while either.
