Using a 525mag

#1 Post by David »

OK, as a new multiplier user, everything is set on reel, silver knob under drag star is set nearly full. The other lever is set to slow. Now before I cast, do I set the spool setting to free spool. do the breaks hit in automatically when the lead hits the water or do I use my thumb.

hi David
as a new multiplier user myself i have found out the hard way that you have to stop the reel dead with your thumb the second the lead hits the water. if i can recommend a few daytime sessions to get the feel for it before you go out at night. otherwise you are asking for trouble (and will find it). you will be surprised how fast you will get confident with it when you can see what you are doing.

If you use your thumb, what is the breaking system all about.

the brakeing system is to slow the spool down and prevent overruns[birdsnests] but not stop it,your thum will stop the spool when the lead hits the ground or sea.

David,

I would advise that you put 25lb line on the 525Mag, cast it with ALL the magnets on, until you get used to it. if the spool is set right you will not need to stop the spool with your thumb, it should stop itself, if it doesn't no problems, your thumb should always be just above the spool in case you need to touch it, sometimes you will need to, sometimes you wont.

When you feel happy about it (days or weeks) drop the line diameter to 20lb, with the reel still set the same way all Mags full on. then in a short time drop your line to 15lb if your happy. after that try taking the mags off one at a time depending on conditions, wind is a big cause of nesting, if the wind is directly in your face it will hold the sinker in the air and cause an over run easy.

Some may say 25lb line cuts down on distance, they are 100% right, but for a novice you should not be looking for distance until you have learned to tame the reel.

Good Luck.

Tom.
