Chasing congor

#1 Post by Dave78 »

myself:

3 hrs roughly 9pm to midnight:

on the drop:

small bit of wind,no rain:

mackerel :

pulley,:

no bites other then crabs and small fish tearing at the baits:

I finished work at 6pm, headed home grabbed a few rods and some mackerel from the freezer and went through my rig wallet and picked out some 6/0 and 8/0 Aberdeen and o shaunessy rigs crimped to a mixture of 50lb , 60lb and 100lb wire trace and decided to go chasing a congor eel. I headed to the breakwater in ballycotton with 2 rod I fished near the end of the breakwater one rod with half a mackerel on the sheltered side and the other ocean side with the other Half of the mackerel, 3 hrs no joy, saw a dogfish, a whiting and a codling landed on the light of the pier opposite, I will be going back in the next few days and will keep returning untill I land my first one :

No bother John, I didn't expect to catch last night it was more about getting out after a tough week at work, I will be making a mid week trip to monkstown straight after work for a few hours on Wednesday night.
I will be heading out at least 2 nights a week until hook into one

I was using whole mackerel with a nice bloody groundbait, Fillets mackerel maybe for whiting or dogfish :)

Plenty of Congor weather for the week, nice calm nights should bring them out of their lairs.

hey dave, they are there lad, some heavyweights too,not so long ago a lad hauled out a hefty conger with 11 hooks in his mouth!
ive had plenty of conger there but have lost more than i managed to pier.the spot rooster has mentioned i have never tried, but he knows the crack there.
i usually cast of the end of the pier from the wall where the platform is behind the pier, towards the lighthouse.usually has a bite for me.be wary tho just in front of the pier where the ladder is,there seems to be a deep void where they seem to run to,once there in there thats it you wont get them out.sometimes its hard to notice the bite too as the take is very gentle for such a beast.
can be fun trying to steer them to the steps too when they are barreling, plenty of swivels on ur trace helps alot.
good luck lad

Cheers lucky 13, Ive tried over the wall towards the lighthouse it was full of snags I lost 3 rigs just beyond that ledge, Last year my mate lost two into that void you were talking about, I held the rod for him for a few minutes for one of them you could feel the tension but there was no budging the eel from ever hole it went into he had no choice but to cut his line , that might explain a conger being caught with 11 hooks in his mouth, tough tough fish.
