Mayo marks

#1 Post by spindlefist »

People:me

Duration:3 hours

Tide:low to mid

Weather: started nice enough, then sideways rain, wind from the belly of the gods

Bait:lug, sandeel, mack, razor

Rigs: 3/0 pulley and 2 hook flapper

Results: sweet fanny adams..

This was to be my first session of 2014, a terrible late start. I drove up to westport, then headed for the western facing beaches - cross, carrowinsky etc. first stopping at my lug beds, yes, I own them, that were gone last year with a horrific smell of field offlow, but thankfully they were back in force. loaded up with some lovely juicy lug, thinking...today will be good.....

I was wrong.. with each passing kilometre towards my chosen mark, the winds picked up, the rain began.... the western strands were unfishable, so I opted for a somewhat more shelterd Carrowmore strand... still blowing sideways but not as bad as direct into your face. weed was a problem though, horrid shredded stuff in the first 20ft that clogged the lines and rigs. bite detection would have been non existent, if there were to be any bites, but all I got comin back was soggy mack, burst sandeel and drowned lugworm..
I gave in and popped to lecanvey pier, hoping for a coley or dog or rockling to open the 2014 account..but the wind was worse. almost blew my tubby self off the end of pier.
Defeat.
but I'm back out on friday, for an evening/night session in galway, hopeful the fish will show me what they look like, It's been so long, I've forgotten.,
