Got a pass for a quick session today so I said id head out for a while. Also had my new (first) pair of waders to road test.

Got to the mark conditions were ok quite breezy but the real issue was water clarity- very poor a mucky green brown colour. Not fantastic for lures.

Started out with white wave worm which I reckoned might have some hope of being seen in the murky water. Went weightless and was delighted to see how well it cast.

Rigged weedless I was having no problem with snags despite running this through very rough ground. However there was quite a strong swell and keeping in contact with the lure was proving very difficult so decided add a weight at the hook. This worked well from the point of view of giving me control but as you might guess the weight gave rise to more snags resulting in losing a leader.

Decided to change tack and try a shallow diving hard lure but any I had seemed to be too light and was finding it difficult to cast straight into a pretty strong headwind.

For the last few casts I moved along to where the swell was not quite so big and I reckoned I might get away with less weight on the wave worm.

This proved to be the case used a smaller weight no problem and no snags. Used slow twitch pause type retrieve. Before I knew it my time was up and it was time for home.

So no joy today but great to get out all the same.

Be very interested to hear your thoughts on tactics, advice etc as I am still a rookie at lure fishing.

Good report shame bout the blank had similar results yesterday and was bogged down with weed bait fishing cant comment on lure fishing tho as I never done it

I was out lure fishing myself Saturday shortcircut, myself and 2 buddies around the copper coast here in Waterford. Water visibility was not the best and we all blanked. We were fishing mostly weightless weedless soft plastics much like yourself. I will be out again next week, as they say "things can only get better"!

Well Tom, thanks for the reply. Would I be right in saying that visibility is a key factor, and that in murky water it's an idea to fish a light coloured lure in order to stand out from the water?
Was going to try the black minnow, but then I realised it was almost the exact same colour as the water I was fishing in . . .

Im not exactly vastly experienced shortcircut, having only taken to lure fishing myself last year, but for what it is worth here is my 2 cents.
That seems to be the way most would approach it, more visibile lure colour is preferable in coloured water. Basically if they cant see the lure they wont attack it. If you are looking for some light reading on bass fishing then i can highly recommend this link here

Jim is highly respected in the world of bass angling, and i was lucky enough to be at one of his workshops last year.
There is a lot of quality information contained in this, and although a lot of it is for saltwater fly fishing it can more or less all be applied to lure fishing.

unlucky man. with the colour of the water after all the rough weather, you would almost need to thump a fish on the head with a lure for him to see it .
Jordan was trying glowing LRF lures at the weekend, and even in the dark they disappeared from sight just inches into the water. hopefully the weather will settle soon and the clarity will improve for your next lure session

I tried lure fishing for about a dozen casts on sunday down east Cork, coloured water, way too weedy, pity because the conditions looked great for bass where I was.
Bottom fishing was impossible the amount of weed in the water, still there's always the next time

the surf was perfect, too perfect the weed killed it.

You can also try fishing a noisy lure in soupy conditions, it might give a bit of an edge as if the bass can't see it they may hear it / detect it's vibrations better. By a noisy lure I mean eg. a plug which incorporates a rattle inside.

The truth is though, that very murky water just makes things much more difficult and you need that extra bit of luck sometimes.
