Dull Day in Donegal Bay, 22/Feb/2014

#1 Post by johnwest »

People:Me

Duration:3hrs

Tide: Low tide

Weather:Strong wind, dull, mild.

Bait:Frozen mackerel.

Rigs:2 hook flappers

Results:1 skinny flounder.

Report:I hadn't managed to get out for a while and was itching to try some new kit so when a half chance came I took it. Arriving at the mark, the sea seemed flat calm though a bit murky but every 10 mins or so a group of large waves came surging in, the wind blowing curtains of spray from the breaking crests, so I wasn't expecting too much. As usual, 2 rods were set up with one at distance and the other in close. The near rod had a plain lead allowing it to move around with the tide which it certainly did but the baits came back unmolested. With the rod tips bouncing around in the gusts of wind it was difficult to see bites but I suspected/detected/imagined a rattle on the distant rod and in came the only fish of the trip; a skinny 25cm flounder. By now the tide was turning and I gave it another 1.5 hrs but to no avail. The wind was now getting stronger and the rain was starting in earnest so I phoned herself to get into the kitchen and rattle a few pans 'cos I'm coming home.
There was a lovely meal and a bottle of Merlot ready when I got home; if only I could get her to make my sandwiches and coffee!

There wasn't much meat on him, just as well there was something else for supper! Will you be trying for the spotty boys on Saturday?

I was very close to "sodding that" myself but had already cancelled a couple of times recently.

Good luck with that, if the fishing is poor you could always write this year's verse!
