Frozen lug - is it any good?
Seen this in the local tackle shop, in fact it was black lug. Has anybody used it succesfully and can ordinary blow lug me frozen with equal effects?
Pete

don't know about the blow lug but in my opinion frozen black lug are great.
fished a session lately with the fish few and far between. was running low on fresh blow lug and started baiting one hook with same and the other with frozen black. from this point on i got a fish a chuck, all on frozen black.

any lug i have left over from a session always just gets froze the way it is.
i find it all works ok when thawed out again, even if you have to whip it onto the hooks.
if using rag cocktails, just put a small piece of frozn lug above the cocktail and this gives your bait added scent as well.

Not the BigPhil from Irish Angler mag, I'm the original, i swear!!!!
The best quality Black Lug is called "Blackpool Lug" it comes from Morecambe Bay. if I had to choose only one bait to take anywhere in either Ireland or the UK it would be that.
I get it sent over for me and my son about three times a year on an over-night delivery from Gerry's of Morecambe, all of his Frozen Black Lug is genuine, as it comes from his doorstep. Be carefull what you buy, its not all as good as the real stuff.
I normaly get about 1000 at a time, its cheaper than any other bait in the shops over here.
Dogs, Flounder, Cod, Coalies almost anything that swims will take good quality frozen Black Lug.
btw....Eack worm measure about 8" to 10" long, most of the time you can get 2 baits out of one worm.

Phil,
I cant remember exactly, but it works out at just above half the price of Frozen lug from the shops in Dublin.
If you phone or email Gerry's ask to speak to Mick Robertson, he handles most of the bait orders.

if you have any problem, send me an email 8)

Hi Pete ,
The concensus on this and other threads seems to be that the frozen blacks are well worth a try . I got some from Inniscrone ( E5 / pk 10 ) and Steve t. and I gave them a good try out in Sligo / Killala bay areas . This over a couple of full days fishing using different rigs etc . Got absolutely nothing on that , not even a bite , but took fish steadily on mac , squid and shrimp rig .
Maybe an inferior type to the Blackpool/morecomb mentioned above ? Dunno .
Cheers

Nick,
If you ever see the true Blackpool Frozen Lug next to any other you will see the difference right off, the worms are thick and heavy, with a thick jet black skin, you have to cut them into 2 halfs, they dont snap easy and they are deadly.
To many shops sell frozen common black lug and try to get the best price by saying its the good stuff, if I see it I can tell in an instant if its genuine or not.

Pookie,
I just spoke to Gerry himself, perhaps your wording got them mixed up, asking for bait, they think you mean fresh bait. I confirmed with Gerry that anyone over here wanting FROZEN LUG will get it, what he did add was that its not worth it for less than 1000 per shipment as the freight is the same even for 250. I am sure one or two of you will be able to share a batch and keep the freight down.
BTW..,. I always try to get my frozen bait shipped on either a Monday or Tuesday, that way if the courier is a day late all is not lost (they pack it very well in bags of 50 wrapped in 10's) if they send it out Friday and it sits all weekend until either the Monday or the Tuesday you will possibly have un-frozen bait
Hope this helps you.

It comes in a special stirofoam box that is well sealed around the edges and they add to the seal by useing quality packing tape. the boxes are quite think, I have never had one broken yet. They use the same carrier all the time (DHL) that helps in as much as they know what and how to handle the stuff.
Yes, it always get here still frozen, I have not had a delivery yet thats been longer than the next day. The last lot that came arrived just before Christmas (early morning) and I had no room in my freezer (fecking Turkey) so I placed the box outside in my back garden, when my son picket it up that night, it was still frozen.
They pack it in sealed poly bags, each batch of 10 worms is wrapped in paper and they pack 5 wraps=50 worms to a bag. I find this great for taking to a session, most of the poly bags have a date on, if they dont, then I put the date on. Helps later if you have more than one crossed delivery.
Hope this helps you., anything else, ask away.
