first blank of the year , waterford estuary

#1 Post by lad123 »

People: me

Duration: hour and a half

Tide: coming in

Weather: showers and a slight breeze

Bait: mackerel

Rigs: 2 hook flappers

Results: weed , plastic bags , balls of mussels

Report: Headed to the waterford estaury to a mark that i had lots of good fish from in the last 6 weeks. The sea looked very brown and there was lots of debris and black seaweed floating on the surface of the water. There was no way that the grip leads could hold the bottom , not even 8oz grippers. Nothing was coming in on the line for the first hour only weed , it was a pure nightmare. One lump of weed hit the line and the rod was nearly pulled into the water. For the last half hour the weed cleared up a bit but there was lots of debris. One of the fishing rods start thumping like mad and i reeled it in and there was a huge heap of mussels and crap caught on the end. There was plastic and all sorts of crap coming in aswell. I ended up losing one trace in a giant island of debris. I went to try a different location and it looked very similar , weed and debris everywhere. There was lots of freshwater in the estuary too. I always got fish from here ..... today i didnt even get a bite ..... Cant wait for summer

Hard luck lad, that same weed knocked over my rod stand one night. When you see that its game over. Better luck next time.

sounds like one of those situations where that, after trying for a bit and seeing the consequences, you either: find a sheltered eddy without too much gunk in it (if it exists), or, you pack up and head somewhere completely different, or.. you pack up and go home!
tough going. least you tried..

Am surprised there's any weed left after them storms.
Hard luck amigo, give the estuaries a wide berth for a week or so.

The estuarys are destroyed with stuff coming from further up the rivers from the flooding etc, complete waste of time going there for the next week or so.
