Cinnamon flavour flies

Hi
i have converted a small tin sweet box into a fly box. i have tyed up a range of mullet flies to include diawl bachs, bread flies, blood worms and shrimp patterns. i put the flies into the box but now the flies smell strongly of cinnamon!
i didnt even think about it..
i am not a mullet expert - i have yet to even target these fish let alone catch one - so any opinions here as to whether this will affect a mullet's decision on whether to take the fly or not??

Dunno. You might be onto something there.

Some of the LRF lures have a strong aniseed smell off them and it doesn't seem to put the fish off. It's supposed to act as an attractant but the jury is still out on that one for me. I'd say you're safe enough!

yeah, think i may have no option but to give it a go now
the flies may rinse their smell quite quickly i hope but, if anything, i think mullet might even warm to a little cinnamon flavoured 'bread'..

i was hoping for a mullet fanatic/expert on here to shed an opinion, offer a bit of advice, or even hazard a guess

Well, I know carp anglers go to great lengths in experimenting with various scents in their baits, so fish have form for liking a scented bait. Mullet? Who knows?

Give them a chuck - blanking's the worst that can happen to you.

I fish for golden greys on the fly - I'm sure in this instance smell is not high on their trigger list as their behaviour is quite aggressive (size colour profile and movement) being on their minds - however I'm guessing other types might be affected by smell as a priority.

TBH, i dont even know what species of mullet they are that I will be targeting - there are huge shoals of them but im just not sure as yet..

yeah, i will just persist then, but be wary. i am familiar of a lot of these fish mouthing bread baits and being very cautious, taking little bits at a time. it can only be to taste/sample what they suspect as food. so yes, i too can imagine smell being a priority..
any offerings of opinion on a certain type (inc. size and movement) of fly that you would recommend?

please bear in mind I only fish for grey mullet with these flies very early in the season when they first run into the estuaries - the golden greys take them once the temp rises but only under a very short window of tide - (limited experiences so far)

A chap who used to post here aka Lumpy has great success with the greys in and around clonakility throughout the year,

Colin McLeod seems to be having a lot of success with diawl bachs SW variations see FFFT mag or blog

i have actually seen the pictures of these flies before, they are very well tied, and i wasnt expecting you to use them for mullet. fair enough. yeah, another few variations for me to try!
the diawl bach keeps popping up everywhere i look for any insight into fly fishing for mullet, its a must on the line i reckon. think i will be tying 3 flies on and seeing which might be the most popular...
think im as ready now as i can be
