bangor pier conger fishing

#1 Post by cky »

'lo all
one of my mates wants to go conger fishing off the back of bangor pier.
just thought I'd ask here for advice cos you lot know what you're doing!

bait? mackerel head or do flappers work best?

tides? Is it better when the tide is low or high?

rigs? have 100lbs steel traces with 9/0 hooks attatched.will we need booms and sinkers or is it best to just drop the bait in?

any help appreciated.thinking of going this wednesday night.

best wishes

Hi cky ,if your going to try for conger best to fish around low water cos you need to be able to get down onto the boulders at the back of the pier ,better to go in daylight if its your first time down so at least you can see some of the holes between the rocks
,tackle wise best to use a boat rod 30/50lb class loaded up with at least 50lb line on the reel and a heavy mono 150lb minimum trace .
as for weight use old nuts tied to a weak link which you tie to the swivel of your trace .
bait can be either mackerel head , pouting (catch them anywere around the pier) or a side of mack .
pm me if your headin down i might be able to take a run down .

thanks for the advice ronald.

if all goes to plan we were going to be there around 5pm and fish up til about 8 pm.

can't make it any earlier due to work commitments and sometimes have to stay on without warning so nothings deffinite

checked the tides, low around 1520, high around 2130 so it will be in the flood.

both of us have the boat rods at the ready

I guess we'll be there but it would definitely be luck if we catch one.

many thanks

hi all
well, tried the pier for conger last night but was unsuccessful.
something did hit one of my baits hard but it stripped it off the hook!

nearly lost my m8 who slipped and ended up head first down one of the concrete casts!! the rocks were very slippy around the high water mark.

will deffo have another go
best wishes
