Whats the best way to catch mullet????
I am looking for any tips or ideas for catching mullet. I have seen loads off scragane pier at the Magherees in Co. Kerry that are a pretty impressive size but they always seem disinterested in my mackerel or peeler crab bait. Any ideas? Some cracking wrasse taken there last summer though - one was just over 6Lbs!

Float fishing with light coarse gear is the best approach with thick lipped mullet, although I believe you can ledger as well (I haven't tried that myself). Standard bait is bread flake in my part of the world - you can use all sorts though depending upon what they feed on in your area (see info in species guide on this site http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/fish ... mullet.htm).
They are a fantastic fighting fish but you have to have bags of patience.
These articles by Leon Roskilly should answer all the questions you might have on how to go about catching them:

I got then on this pier two years ago. Groundbait with loose fillets of mackerel or chop up complete fish. The mullet will pick up the fillets and push them towards the surface. Use a coarse or light spinning rod, reel with 4-6 lb mainline. A sliding float rig is best with a wagger taking a couple of AA shot. Use a size 8-10 hook (Kamasan B980 are good). As the mullet push the fillets, adjust your float depth and over cast the group. Draw the float back gently to let you bait among the milling fish. The bait should be a thumbnail piece of maclerel flesh with most of the skin removed. This is visual fishing and very exciting. Mullet bites tend to differ dramatically and will provide you with endless problems. When you eventually hook a fish, let if run against the preset drag and enjoy the fireworks. A landing net is also needed.
