Im new to sea fishing. I usually Fly Fish for Trout and Salmon, using leaders, droppers backing etc, but rigs and snoods and things i dont understand. Im planning on buying a multiplier reel. If im using say 20lb line, and 6oz weight. do I put a length of line, like a cast of 60lb with snoods(droppers) of say 10-15lb. If so, how long would the length of 60lb line be, or am I totally lost. If I can get arough Idea, I can adjust for different spieces. Any help and advive would be appreciated. I have spun for pollack and Macs at St Johns point, thats as far as it goes.
Thanks.

u will need 60lb.(or more) shockleader. the required lenght is 6-8 turns around the reelup the lenght of the rod and back down to the top handgrip. onto the end of the shockleader put a strong link for clipping on and off rigs. the link must be of similar breaking strain to the shockleader.
your rigs can now be attached to the link via a swivel at the top of the rig body. the rig body can vary in lenght but most are between 4 and 6' long.
hope this helps...have to dash. any more questions fire away!

Hi David,
Its the opposite to fly line, we use a "Shock Leader" you have the 20lb running line (on the spool) and then the shock leader (needs to be 10lb for each oz of lead....5oz =50lb or 6oz = 60lb leader) for safety. like Mark said you need to add your drop + length of rod+ 8 turns around your reel. At the fishing end most people use a metal link. Attache your rig aka trace to this link.
The trace body needs to be made of at least the same strength line as your shock leader, the snood or snoods that hang off can be any breaking strain you want, most use either 15lb or 20lb, these can either be left hanging in the cast (this method is called a flapper rig) or the snoods can be clipped down in some way (called a clipped down rig)
Remember this, if you "Crack-Off" meaning the force of your cast snaps off your lead anywhere above the leader, you could do someone a serious injury or even kill them, never take the chance of not using a leader, if I seen you or most anglers, they would pull you up for it, it is only the idiots who don't use a leader when beach-casting.
Type in a google search under "Sea Fishing Rigs" you will find site that will show you diagrams how to make them better than I can tell you here.
Good Luck,
Tom.
