2005 review

#1 Post by Donagh »

A few questions for the 2005 review.

1. What was you best session?
2. What was your worst session?
(don't answer if your going to give the every sessions a good one)
3. What was your favorite fish capture?
4. Ambitions for next year?

My own awnswers:
1. An august evening in Glin when the the mackerel were jumping a few yards out and I caught at least 10 Torny backs in a couple of hours. One of last years ambitions was to have multiple rays on sessions which I did alot of time last year.
2. Worst session was fishing a howling gale in Glin with no fish plenty of gear lost and rod rest tumbling over smashing 3 rings on my rod.
3. Favorite capture was the huss I put the picture up on album pages as catching a decent huss was one of this years ambitions. Getting decent huss needs more night fishing but I just can't stand being hammered by tiny straps every few minutes.
4. Ambition for this year is to get a tope run from shore and a bass in the high singles as I've never got one over 3lbs. Would like to do rock fishing and few trips to kerry but getting out to competitions cuts down my time for doing this.

ambitions for next year...

i wanna get a hole-in-one on a golf course with a pendelum cast!

6+ smoothhound, proper shore cod, double figure bass, 3lb+ plaice and flounder, 10+ huss(even though i haven't caught one yet!!) and a bloody bait fridge to make life easier!!

any of the above will make me happy for a day or two! the tope will have to wait til the following year.

more red cod fishing in summer- never do enough of it.

best session:any one of the ray sessions at kilteery with up to five fish to 10lbs

worst session: walking a mile to a previously unfished spot just to blank and then the friend sprains his ankle on the way back to the car all after spending two hours the nite before digging lug and driving an hour to get to the spot

fav fish cap: personal best ray of 11lbs from shore at kilteery on fairly light gear in mid march, was pretty happy seeing as it was my first ray of the year!

ambition: catch alot of huss or at least try to.

best session - cushendun beach july - fished from 7ish in the evening to 4.30 in the morning with mate paul and the rod tips were nodding all nite!had roughly 35 good sized fish each.

worst session - stood on culdaff beach around april for over 4 hours , got soaked , got cold , got drunk off fishing and had my only blank session of the year!!

favourite capture 05 - couple of tope around 30lb mark in a few minutes at the end of a wreck trip out of culdaff in may

ambitions 06 - hopefully for ireland to do well at home international shore!
hopefully pick up a couple more specimen fish
hopefully add a few more species to my list!
not hopin for much eh!!!   :D

Best session: A day out with Pat Robinson on board The Cricket with 2 buddys of mine in July. Pulling in pollack up to 11lb on 10lb line and light spinning tackle in over 100ft of water.....fabulous stuff.

Worst session: The time a good mate of mine decided to show me some of the marks he used to fish as a youngster in West Cork. Guts of a 2 hour hike hacking through bracken and brambles, up and down sheer cliffs and avoiding falling down copper mine shafts. All the while getting eaten with midges. fishing was good but not spectacular. Left it too late for the walk back and had to do most of it in darkness. I was nearly in tears by the time we got back to the car! :(

Fave capture: It could only be my first Bass from Garretstown Strand in Cork the day after end of close season. 2 years spent trying to cross that one off my list. There have been others since but nothing will match the feeling when a gleaming 4 1/2lb bar of silver came sliding onto the beach!

Ambitions for 2006: Fish a shore comp on a strange mark and not blank!
A 20lb plus Conger from the shore
A double figure Pollack from the shore
More Bass!!!!!

We can dream cant we!

Best session: Returning to spot where I caught 2 bass the previous week and catching two more within less than 5 minutes. Then went home after short session but very happy. ( lure )

Worst sessions: Hours and hours spent on beach fishing for bass and catching nothing. ( lug and squid )

Ambition for 2006: To increase my catch in relation to fishing effort, especially for bass. Venture to new grounds in boat, would like to catch a skate!

Best session: 1 fish caught all day on Inch with spetacular surf and my ankle in plaster. The fish was a 10lb Bass. Also one memorable days fishing aboard SeanP's boat where we caught huge thornies,35lb+ tope, sea trout and missed one HUGE bass estimated by both of us to be 15lb+.

Worse session:too many blank bass sessions.

Overall I had a good year with 4 specimen fish.

Ambition for 2006:to get good size tope from the shore and to keep better records about conditions while out fishing.
