Little Killary 29th May 2013

#1 Post by kieran »

People Myself and the eldest lad Eoin

Duration: about 4 hours

Tide: HW down sadly

Weather: stunning, moderate SW breeze, occassional cloud

Bait: very old mack, lures, limpets

Rigs: rottom bottom 1 hook wrasse rig, three hook paters, lures

Results: 3 dogfish

Report: knew tide and conditions were against us so decided on the long trip over (thanks to JD for clarification on directions, its been THAT long since I was there) in the hope of connecting wit a few rays. Started off paternostering out and dropping a single hook rig into the weedy margin. About an hour in got a nice big dogfish, with all the fight of a sack of wood. 20 minutes later the lads rod slams over and I am convinced it is a big ray, he's really struggling to keep the tip up and get the fish in.... and halfway in it lightens considerably. Still some weight and a nice big fat doggie joins his species list. Had another smaller one maybe another 20 minutes later but it was clear the rays were not there / not feeding and conditions up near the island were very breezy so it was too far to cast to try for a pollack. Did try for dabs, especially with stinky mack baits, but no joy. Got a few small nibbles on the rig close in but nothing substantial, not even with the switch to limpet.

On a positive note, we found an excellent little beach on the way that is clearly stuffed full of lug.

Nice day out, beat working and hope to get back there soon to try it on an incoming tide...

I've been up there twice in the last fortnight, once on the rising tide, anchored up for 3 hours and had loads of dogs, the other fella had a few dogs, 2 small thornies and a good number of small pollock on the drift.
Up yesterday for high tide and got a right few pollock on the fly around the islands, all small though, tiddlers up to 4 lbs. Hopefully it'll improve soon.
