Kilmore - what size lead?
Another Kilmore Question:
We’re fishing over a slack enough tide next week, so what size leads will be required for jigging – (hokeyes & feathers etc.) and what size leadheads will be ideal for soft plastics?
Cheers,
Alby

Re: Kilmore - what size lead?
hi alby,
i like to use a slightly heavier lead than most people, 10oz, i think it sinks quicker,
fishes more vertically, so you are less likely to snag the bottom of tangle the
other people on the boat, most people use lighter.
i never tried using a lead head there, the pollack are quite small and the water shallow,
would 2 oz do?

Re: Kilmore - what size lead?
I would carry a range of leads and fish as light as possible keeping in contact depending on the rod & speed of drift. Range from 4oz to 12ozalby wrote:Another Kilmore Question:

Max lead heads will be determined by your rod. I find my Illex maxes out around 80g anything heavier and the rod action is compromised. Ideally 60g and under will keep me happiest. Again I would fish as light as possible depending on what I wanted to catch. For pollack you will only touch down and go, so the head is less critical however wrasse and cod will need you in contact and you may have to up the weight. If the drift too brisk for the rod/weight combination then it doesn't suit that style of fishing on the day....break out the boat rod the 8oz lead and the bait

Re: Kilmore - what size lead?
The Kilmore grounds aren't too deep and if the wind is slack enough you should get away with 4 - 6oz for you're feathers and I wouldn't argue with Jim C on the lead head info, he's a black belt at that type of fishing!

Re: Kilmore - what size lead?
Whatever lead size you opt for Alby, bring plenty! I like to use slightly heavier leads myself on the drift as it allows a much more direct contact to your end gear, none of this wondering if you are fishing on the bottom malarkey etc. You'll get away with lighter leads fishing away from the boat but when it turns to allow the other fellas the benefit, a heavier lead keeps you much more vertical as JW says and stops you having to run miles back under the boat to maintain bottom. Also, and I know most people dont like it when the boat turns, its worth remembering if you are straight down, your baits meet the fish first.....
Enjoy. I need to dust off the boat gear, so pay no heed to my ramblings, I haven't boat fished in anger in 2 years!

Re: Kilmore - what size lead?
I fished it a few weeks back with SAI.
A 12/20 class rod and an 8oz lead done fine while I fished the stern.
The rig I used was a hacked up set of Shamrock Bulls Eyes (8 pack multi-colour) http://www.shamrocktackle.com/index.php ... llseyerigs
On the first session I had 10 fish, 8 were taken on mussel and the 2 pollack on mouldy king rag
On the second session I was at the bow and I used a Tubertini and a 4oz lead. Crab and mussel fished better than fish baits.
I only decided to go because a club comp was cancelled so I had no rag or maddies. The lads using the rag were getting plenty of pollack on them.
Go out and enjoy it
Don’t forget to set the clutch on the reel

I can just imagine Alby pressing his left foot as he battles a nice fish wondering why nothing is happening and his lines about to go ping

Re: Kilmore - what size lead?
Hey Alby, As Jim mentioned 2 - 4oz leads will see you fine on the jig heads. You would need to be as vertical as possible on a charter and especially in Kilmore as the reefs are sharp and will snag you up if your lead gets away from you.
If you need to go heavier, I would suggest 8oz and a 12lb class rod and use a shad or worm on a flowing trace.
Give me a call if you need any more info.

Re: Kilmore - what size lead?
Fished Kilmore last Saturday 25th May with Dick Hayes, the amazing thing was it was alive with Dolphins and Whales, at the back of the Saltees. One Whale even surfaced about 10ft behind the stern of the boat rubbing the gear of the 2 lads fishing that end (felt a bit like Jaws and "we need a bigger boat").
Anyway low tide was around midday, there was some good Pollack, a couple of Cod and the usual Wrasse (11 species in total were caught), I use either a 6oz or 8oz lead when not gilling, depending on the run and a 4oz to 6oz if gilling.
Had Rag, Lug and frozen Mackerel with the Rag & Mackerel working best.
The place was alive with sprat & sandeel and every Pollack caught had a mouth full of them, Gannets were diving to beat the band and this is probably why the Dolphins and Whales were around.
