Rathmullan again 22nd May

#1 Post by mackfish »

People:me

Duration:2.30pm till 7.30pm

Tide:high tide at 5.04

Weather:dry, blustery and then a few showers

Bait:mackeral

Rigs:size 2/0 pulley and 2/0 single hook clipped

Results:3 ray

Report:After the 4 ray I caught here on Monday, I went to try and better that this evening. First few casts were producing nothing and hooks were coming back stripped clean. The tide at this stage was hammering in and it was quite hard to get the bait to where I wanted, I was having to cast about 50-60 yards to the left of were I wanted it and ot was ending up 50 yards past where I wanted before it would grip.
As the tide eased off coming up to high water, there was small signs of life. There were birds going crazy about 200 yards out, so there was something in the water.
Just as a few other lads arrived, I noticed a tap and reeled in, a small male thornie! Blank saved!!
I had to wait a half hour until the next tap, but it was a long pull down, I lifted the rod and felt the weight, it was a good weight and had me wondering if it was a clump of weed as I couldn't really feel it kiting through the water. But at the end of my leader was a nice sized female thornie, I have no scales but a few guys held it and we all agreed it was 6-7 lbs! Back it went with a big splash.
By this time the tide was about an hour into the drop and the weed started, my baits were coming back stripped by crabs and with large fronds of weed on my grippers and hooks. I was for going home soon so I just blasted a bait out, and started to tidy and pack gear away, when once again I saw the tap and pulled in another small male thornie. I was happy with three but wanting to beat Mondays haul, I baited both rods again and threw them out. The tidal current going out, which was right to left now, was brutal. It was taking forever for the lead to find a grip and on retrieving a few times, there was a lot of weed about so I decided enough was enough and packed up, and as just as I got into the car, the heavens opened with a heavy downpour. I picked the right to go.

Once again, was good to be out and catching. Tomorrow evening again perhaps!
