Glens of Antrim Beach Fri 10/05/13

#1 Post by guernica84 »

People: 3

Duration: 7.30pm – 2.30am

Tide: rising

Weather: generally calm with occasional storms. Constant drizzle.

Baits: frozen lug, rag, mack, sandeel, peeler legs

Rigs: 2 hook clipped (medium dist), 2 hook bling flappers (close), clipped down up and over (long range).

Results: flounder, 3b rockling, 5b rockling, coalfish, whiting, and turbot. 40 in total between 3 anglers. Match finished 14-13-13. A nail biter with yours truly prevailing on the last cast : )

Report:

Conditions finally looked auspicious after an absolutely awful “spring”. I was pretty confident that the fish were finally back and I wasn’t disappointed.

Bites were slow to start but after the first 30-60 mins came thick and fast and never really stopped. As always, flounder dominated before dark. Numbers were good even if size wasn’t great. That would be the only down side I’d mention – biggest flounder was probably 2/3 lb, we’d usually get a ¾ - 1 lber per every say 10.

Once darkness hit, we started to get the round species though thankfully, a bit of variety and not just the usual attack of the killer pin whiting. Coalie, whiting and both species of rockling hit us with all but one of the rockling coming to one debutant peg surprisingly. Again, they were all small with the biggest being barely ½ lb. Interestingly, the flounder also made a comeback at about 1am. Again, this is contrary to my experience on this beach and I find that usually once 2-3 whiting are beached, they dominate for the rest of the night.

Many baits were tried in the hope of hooking something bigger or a nice white trout but to no avail and, as is almost always the case in my experience of this beach, rag was the only thing worth putting on the hook. I’m beginning to wonder why I bother packing other baits for this venue TBH! Still, I’m sure that other anglers have had better experiences than me using other baits. I was hoping that some doggies would be around and had heard that they were in good numbers but alas, they didn’t show up for us.

All in all, a good night. Size slightly disappointing but the volume compensated given we’d had such a hard time landing anything through March and April. Now that that itch has been scratched, time to get out over some deeper water and find something bigger!

I can put up a few photos if anyone would like to see them but haven’t bothered at this stage due to the unspectacular size!

Hi,

Sorry, photos aren't great and these are the only 3 that I've been able to get to upload. I haven't come across any shore mack yet but caught some huge ones on the Swilly last week, as big as I've seen.

nice report guernica84, yous were kept busy anyway to say the least
and yous faired rightly, i was down there over the weekend and chatted to a few different guys fishing the area, poor responses was all i got unfortunately. some only had a few tiny flounder for 4or5 hours effort and some had not even a bite for the same time put in elsewhere
when you say "2/3lb" was your biggest flounder, do you mean that it was between 2lb and 3lb ?? would love to see a pic of that!

nice wee turbo btw 8)
