Just for fun Sunday 28/04

#1 Post by grady »

Acording to that my expected weekends session was cancelled, I decide to visit a local little lake with my wee boy. Actually I just thought to try for a small perch or occasional pike with small spinner and just 3lb line, and within 40 minutes of casting session ended with nice brown trout that I would never expect in such size lake. After all it start rain and I couldn't keep my son any longer. Anyway I know that is not a lake forum, just would like to share how great was to feel a fish at another side of the line.
I do not know exact weight or lenght of the fish, just could guess It was about 50cm long as I meassured my little tackle box at home it was 35cm.
Pictures is not too great as I can't make my child handle a fish as it was kicking and made as I could to release the fish as soon as possible.
After all there was great to fight this fish with very light tackle.

Cracking trout. I'd call it 3.5 to 4.5 lbs in weight.

A lovely fully finned fish and fair play for putting it back. Do you think it was stocked or would the lake have natural bred trout in it?

Thanks John, I think those trout are stocked in as this size trout is not likely could be found in just 500 x 500 yards lake. Well who knows, but any size of fish in this small lake must be releast otherwise it will be doomed. And exspecially this size as they are most productive if they are bred naturally.

stunning fine trout there Grady, fantastic fish. i'd hazard a guess at between 3 and 4lb
it looks a very healthy and well formed fish to be a recently stocked fish, but i could be wrong
do you know if the small lake has a limestone bed? if it is then theres no reason it could have been stocked as a fry and grown to that size in there, assuming that there is good feeding

2025 targets:

You'd be surprised at the size of trout that come out of small potholes, especially if there's feeding in it for them. There's a few up in the hills around here that look just like bogholes but they have the limestone bottom on them and the trout are massive compared to similar sized waters just a mile away from them.
