Donegal Bay pb turbot, 25/04/2013
People:Me
Duration:6hrs
Tide:low to high
Weather:sunny and breezy
Bait:Fresh lug and herring
Rigs:2 hook flappers, 3 hook flappers and single clipped.
Results:Pb turbot and a dab
Report:
I picked a new mark which gave plenty of shelter from a stiff west/s.west wind and set up 2 rods, both fishing at distance away from the rocks and kelp in close. As it was grub o'clock, I headed back to the car after 20 mins for a coffee and sandwich. On returning I reeled in one rod to replace the bait but was aware of extra weight. Closer in I could make out the white underside of a flattie and in came a nice turbot, no monster but a PB for me nonetheless and 1 more for the species list. It was just nudging the scales towards 1.25lbs and had taken a sliver of herring. For the next 5hrs or so I never had a bite, the baits were untouched. I switched the single clipped rig to a 3 hook flapper and retired to the car for another snack. 20 mins later I returned and again on reeling in , felt extra weight. This time it was a decent dab, 33 cm long but still a bit light at only 12oz. I put both fish back, hopefully the flatfish will become fatfish. So, two good flatties for 6 hours effort and I didn't even see the bites. Do I need to drink more cups of coffee?
