South Wicklow Schoolies 20-4-13

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me, Fishface, Mitch and Robert

Duration:6-30pm-11pm

Tide:dropping

Weather:Southeasterlies,,,Dry

Bait:Lug,rag,mack

Rigs:2 hook flappers

Results:Schoolies,Dabs, Flounder, Whiting

Report:Arrived at the beach to see a very Bassy looking sea,,,whipped up by a stiff Southeasterly. Got set up and as I was going over to say Hello to Mitch, I saw his rod tip dip and he jumped up to strike into what turned out to be his first Bass of 2013,,,a Schoolie but a Bass all the same and on his first cast  .

Image

After a quick pic I hightailed it back to my own rod in case there were a few about  . Neil had advised me to use lug and when Mitch offered me some of his monsters I told him that it was ok 'cos Neil had dug me some  . In the meantime I had some nice big ragworm on offer to any passing Bass. I didn't have to wait long as after a few minutes my own rod jumped and I felt the unmistakable tugging of a Bass  ,a 38cm well formed Schoolie, happy days,,,and on my first cast as well  . After a piccie or two , I managed to get him heading back out to sea, despite his best efforts to beach himself and get me wet

Image

Image

Now the pressure was on Neil  ,,,he tried all the tricks in his armoury but all he could manage was a measly pin whiting  . The breeze turned more Southerly and the sea calmed down as the tide dropped further,,,,,so more Bass seemed unlikely  . Mitch's son Robert fished the Northern end of the beach and had a bit more luck than poor Neil,,,,whose legs were starting to feel the strain of supporting his upper body all day. Some small Dabs and Flounders started to show up, and that was the pattern for the evening, single and double flats and the odd pin whiting .

Image

Image

Mitch headed off first and gave us some of his lug, many thanks  . Neil then hit the road happy enough with his Pin whiting, which had tested his expensive tackle to it's limits  . Before he left , he gave me his leftover lug which, Bless them , should still have been in the Lugworm Créche  .I took a piccie of them to compare them to Ger's,,,,in case of any doubt Ger's ones are the bigger ones,,i.e the ones which tempted the Bass,,not the pin lugs underneath (Neil Brown's best digging efforts  ). Now,,,,,where to go tonight
