Report: Went out early just for a chill out session,,,not really expecting to catch anything during the day(so much for positive thinking  ). Went to Anny for my second beach session of the year,,,the last one being crap and making me decide to stick to the piers for another few weeks  . This time the sun was shining, a southerly was forecast, rag were back in stock and I even brought a little disposable (though not on the beach mind you  ) BBQ and a half pound of sausages with me  . There were a few lads fishing and a few walkers (not of the Walking Dead variety  )when I arrived at the little car park ,,,,and I was lucky enough to get a spot for the van where it could be seen from where I was fishing. At least i'd be able to see it being vandalised this time if anything nasty were to happen  .

Image

I got set up , Shelter and all, and settled into the routine of Cast out, Retrieve,,,then take all the untouched bait off the hooks,,, and finally put more bait on that would come back the same way it went out  . This continued for the first few hours,,,,cast out, bring in,,,cast out, bring in,,,,,with not a sign of a fish,,,,,,but at least I was happy and looking forward to my Sausages later on  . Then one of the lads fishing came down to me and told me that he had caught a small flounder       . This put a different slant on things :? :? So there WERE fish out there after all   I'd better up my game,,,,,especially with other anglers about,,,,and them looking professional with Shelters and tripods and all . Then, as is the custom in Ennereilly, some young lads, German tourists, trying to impress their young ladies, drove onto the beach and got stuck in the sand  . Myself and the other anglers , being quite used to this, didn't bat an eyelid, but the young people for some reason seemed a tad perturbed  , and asked us for help  . We went to their aid , and explained that the four of them that were sitting in the car would have to get out before we pushed it,,,,,,wot wit my bad back en all  To cut a long story short,,,,,we eventually got them out with the help of a 4x4,,,,they certainly won't forget their first day in Ireland  .

Image

By this time, dusk was approaching and as soon as I got back to my spot I started noticing little twitches on the rod,,,happy days. When I reeled in there was a nice little flounder on the hook,,,, under 20cms but a fish all the same  . He was followed by a couple of doubles of whiting ,, then a nice Dab, 29cms. Each cast was producing bites,,,,,mostly twitches from whiting,, and I was getting doubles and even a couple of trebles  . In between this I lit the barbie and cremated a half dozen sausages, which went down a treat with some crusty rolls and a pinch of sand  . Between 8pm-10pm I was busy,,,,and was especially delighted to see a treble coming in ,,Doggie on the top hook and two Whiting,,,,my first doggie of the year  .

Unlike my last trip to Anny,,,this was well worth the visit  . The tide was dropping well now and the other lads packed up at 10-30pm. It's a bit comforting seeing other anglers and headlights in the distance down the beach and at the carpark and when they left Ennereilly suddenly felt like a very dark and lonely place   ,,,,, I started hearing sounds behind me and being the windy fecker I am , I said "Feck this,,,i'm outa here"  . When I got back to the van , I couldn't believe that the windscreen was iced up,,,it didn't seem that cold on the beach,,,just shows you when you're catching you don't feel it as much  Final tally was 3 x flounders, 2 x Dab, 1 x Doggie, and about 10 whiting.

You missed out on a Culinary treat,,,,my cooking  They were just the way I like them,,,,,,burnt to a crisp on the outside ,,,,and also burnt on the inside as well,,,,,just to be on the safe side   It's just as well the wind was carrying the smell away from the other anglers,,,,,it would have been just too cruel

Nice little session with a nice selection of fish Eyesreilly, it's a shame you have to consider parking so you can keep an eye on the van.
