I just got some 10s which seem about right for the smallers lures. maybe size 8s for bigger ones? i'd say it depends on the lure

Hello Tanglerat,
Has the change to singles had any effect on your hook up rate? I must admit I am looking to change a lot of my lures to single hook and would be interested to hear how you find them. Not just for sea-trout, but for bass, pollack, as well as pike and perch in freshwater.

I fish single hook lures a lot of the time. No difference in hook up rates, if anything I think its better. Bass are released so much easier. How often have you spent 5 mins trying to release a badly hooked bass with trebbles wondering if the shoal has moved on. I can unhook a high percentage of my bass in the water with a single hook. I have attached a pic from one of my last sessions. And just to show you how "effective" the single hook is, I took this massive whiting in the same session. Probably what the bass were feeding on.

The change was kinda forced on me last season when my local river went single-hook. It's been a bit of a learning experience and it took me out of my comfort zone really, but overall it's been a good thing. I changed my fishing habits and started using different lures in different conditions, for example there were times when I'd look at the river and think it was far too swollen for what I'd normally do, but with the changes in lures and habits I found I was catching fish when I'd normally never expect to. a bonus was that I'd generally be all alone on the bank too, most of the others wouldn't go near the river.

So, it's a good thing. No change in hookup rates either. Far far easier to release fish too. I'm begining to thnk trebles should be consigned permanently to the skip.

Hi Tanglerat. I'm planning to do a good bit of lure fishing this year but don't have a huge amount of experience. Most of my fishing to date has been bait fishing. When you change to a single hook what type of hook do you use?

I've found an excellent one - but I'll have to dig it out tonight to get the details.

Yup, dug them out of the bag:

Decoy Plugging Single27 807422 in size 2. Exactly what m'learned friend The Austrian has already recommended. These in size 2 are grand for replacing trebles on plugs up 90 to 150 (ish) mm in length. For heavy metal lures, go down in size to a 6 or 8. Maybe best to get a pack in size 4 also, just to cover all your bases, eh?

Mick from Mr Fish in Jersey put me onto them, and they are excellent. Here's his link: http://www.mrfishjersey.com/fishing-tac ... e-2-0.html

However, and no harm to Mick because I rate him as a genuine, friendly and helpful guy, I also Googled those hooks from sites in the US, and this was the very first one I opened at random: http://www.tackleland.com/index.php?cPa ... 09787607fa

The price difference! £5.50 Vs $3.90

That's interesting, I've never seen that done before. I'll have to give it a go to see what happens. I might use double split rings in series sometimes, sometimes not if the hook has a big eye like those Decoy singles.

I have replaced trebles with singles on basically all my lures by now, drove me absolutely mad having the second treble either getting stuck in the fish, net - or even worse (happened twice last month alone) in one of my fingers. Since then I double check and crush all the barbs an all my hooks before I even attempt the first cast, which is way easier and far less painful with no wriggling fish attached ;)

yes indeed, and it also works a treat on these cheap and unbalanced lure copies from you-know-where. The addition of weight at the right spot can turn a complete dud into a total surprise. I got a 16lber last March on a cheap black/green/silver minnow which I tuned with 2 SSG's, 2 splits and a bit of 7strand wire. It went straight into my 'favourites lures' box after that :D

For the last two seasons or so I have been using the Decoy Pluggin Singles on my sub-surface bass lures and wouldn't go back to trebles. I find the 1/0 is a good all round size for the popular bass hard lures/plugs. I think AGM have a less expensive ringed hook which should also do the trick.

AGM do ringed hooks but only in size 7/0 (£2.60 for 5pcs) and red ones in size 4 (10pcs for £2.65)
Henry's stock size 4 and 6 for 3 Euro (unsure for how many). The Decoy's are all out of stock atm but cost £5.99 for 8 of any size. All + shipping. Only the US site http://www.tackleland.com/index.php?cPa ... 09787607fa has all sizes in stock and the price is good in comparison, 8 for US$3.90 in any size. I think for the moment I stick with the above hook/split-ring method which allows more choices.

The matzuo hooks in size 4 looks pretty good? Anyone any comments on the size of them for say, a 15g Toby (read: 15g Hansen White Stripper!).

Also the there are various sizes of Owner hooks here which should suit, albeit not ringed hooks.

Looks like the credit card is going to get another mauling - the hooks are cheap as chips but I suspect I'll have a shed full of SPs on the order too...

Yes Steve I knew AGM had a good selection of ringed hooks I just couldn't remember the brand. I stil use Decoys at the mo on my hard lures but have some of the Matzuo ringed hooks (can't remember the exact model) for sp fishing and they seem fine hooks and yet so cheap! Handy if you're feeling lazy and switch from a hard lure to sp as the lure clip fits inside the ring and the sp is free to move.

Not sure about the size for sea trout but unless someone says otherwise a 4 or thereabouts should be worth a punt.

Hi Guys.
I have been thinking of changing all my trebles to singles for some time,
this article was very interesting and has helped me to make up my mind.
Thanks for posting and tight lines.
Specimens come and go but the passion is for ever.
