Sligo SWFF (round two) 3.2.2013
People:me
Duration: 2 1/2 hrs
Tide: arrived an hr before low
Weather: windy /cloudy
Results: 1 sea trout
Report:
had to try a different mark today as i didn't fancy casting into the wind, which had picked up a lot after yesterdays calm conditions.
had never fly fished here before, but knew the area held sea trout, a lot more featureless than yesterdays mark which can be a bit daunting as you don't have anything to zone in on and focus your casting around. However there was some sort of cormrant fishing, so i aimed for his area , as i reckoned there must have been a few baitfish about, i pretty much just walked down to the sea and started casting, within five minutes i hooked into a nice fish, maybe about a pound and a quarter. got a quick pic or two and sent him back to fight another day. About 20 mins later i missed another who came up for the popper i was fishing on the dropper. I fished on in increasingly windy conditions for another hour and half without any further action. the windy conditions made it impossible to see any fish moving and as darkness began to move in i called it a day.
well happy with the results - and looking forward to trying a fast sinking line for the pollack in the summer

What kind of a popper did you get the trout on size? Great to get one on the fly this time of year

The popper I lost the fish on was a home made job.just a wee angled head of black foam on a fly about two inches long.of black bucktail with a bit of flash

Cathalger - this one was on the same holographic sandeel pattern - its definitely doing the business.
all i need now is the hurricanes and snow to clear off so i can get another lash at them.

Re: Sligo SWFF (round two) 3.2.2013
yea pete - the fish i had the day before were also in great condition - obviously rich feeding in the area - i also wonder how often they spawn? had a few sessions in january a few year ago with a group of lads off the site and about 1/2 the fish we had were in great nick - whereas the others were very lean and looked like they had just returned from spawning.

Re: Sligo SWFF (round two) 3.2.2013
Have had a few sessions since - first one was one of those days where it was impossible to keep one on the hook 2 jumps and off, or a swirl and away. Also noticed the popper was rising fish but they weren't taking. exciting but frustrating!!
A little bit more luck today with another fish - this one a bit smaller - maybe about 3/4 lb, ,missed a few more, but still delighted to be getting fishing like this in February

Re: Sligo SWFF (round two) 3.2.2013
Cathalger - i was at them again today - i lost two fish within a few casts of each other, - both around the 2lb mark and rose quite a few more without connecting - was bit windy the last two days so didnt see any fish moving. interesting for today was that all the fish i moved were when the tide was really pushing in - i hit the first just as i was getting ready to leave - about 2 hrs after high - and of course then i had to stay on for another hour or so and hit into a few groups of fish. two guys fishing sandeel had 3 between them largest about 2lb and apparently theri mate had one around 4lb on saturday - cant wait to hit one of them on the Fly

I wish I had somewhere to fish for them at this time of year. Thats some great fishing, yeah youll have fun when a 4lber takes your fly, good luck on that one. Be a month or 3 before I see any or stand a chance. Still I must get out and see if I can even get a pollack or coley on the fly, your posts are inspiring! Keep at it.

Re: Sligo SWFF (round two) 3.2.2013
very short session today - about 1 1/2 hrs, had one about 3/4 lb and lost a slightly better one - both hooked on a new and smaller wake fly -had a few blank sessions, after missing so many fish on the wake fly i had stopped using it - sessions without it were all blanks and no fish moved. The wake fly really seems to bring them up - even if you miss a lot more takes.
today was a bit rougher and duller which might also have helped.
one of the days i also managed to drop my feckin car keys into the water when chest deep in my waders
had an hours wait for the rescue party with the spares lol
