Donegal deep water mark throws up the thornie's

#1 Post by last cast lad »

People:Just me, some bait and a camera

Duration:3.5hrs

Tide:up and over

Weather: mild, water almost flat calm

Bait: frozen mack and squid

Rigs:pulleys and flappers

Results:6 Dogfish, 2 Thornback rays

Report:
Got cabin fever on sunday afternoon so decided to try one of my deep water marks that sometimes throw up the odd fish this time of year. So got the gear packed and the bait into the passenger footwell with the heater(and the window down) on to start defrosting. Arrived at the mark drinking my tim hortons coffee(oh the simple pleasures in life :) ) and began to survey the task at hand, and it def looked fishy so it was great to just even stand there thinking about fishing :D So after the first hour and nothing but one missed nod on the rod my expectations were somewhat less than great, but then it started. Got my first dogfish of the year so I can now scratch them of my species list and move on :? at least I hadn't blanked, then the rays arrived, one missed nod  one small thornie about 2lb landed and then one just tipping the scales at 5lb :D oh how I do love fishing. Then the dogs returned all in all a good enough impromptu session

I tried the swilly myself last week but nothing...I was using Sandeel and frozen mack!...bait was coming back stripped clean after 10 mins or so...it was getting hammered by the crabs!....must try more toward the mouth next time!.. :?
sure, its not raining between the showers!

Nice session there and that second ray is just a perfect fit for your tackle box! Great to see some decent fish coming from Donegal, I only seem to be getting small stuff lately. I reckon Roger the Dodger probably knows that mark already and if it's the one I'm thinking of, it produced my smallest ever thornie, barely the size of my hand. Sadly it was the only one from that spot. Do you get them in the summer as well or just in winter?

Hi, I'd be wary of divulging too much info :| at least not till I pull out a specimen thornie, its gotta happen sometime, though more often than not its the smaller rays that lift the bigger pennel rigged baits :? :? . Though if your coming this way I 'd be happy to blindfold you, bundle you into the back of a panel van and take every known backroad to reach the mark where you would be expected to fish out of a beach shelter, thus giving you no peripheral vision of surrounds, oh and it could only happen during the hours of darkness and on heavily misted evening.
So be sure and make contact next time your up this way
