hi all,,,,went to fill the van yesterday as i was planning on shooting back to a mark at around 1am weather and health(cold) depending,,,couldnt believe i was filling up at 159.9 cent a litre for the diesel...what used to be 20 euro to get me to and back safe from this mark was now adding to 30 euro etc,,,,,with the red tide and fresh water that has hampered the beaches here locally means i normally go that bit further now for a good catch,,,,,i wouldnt be in the worse case senario as i drive a 1.3td van but im sure there others who drive 2 litres and bigger and not to forget the petrol engines,,what about all the lads that do long distances for competitions at weekends etc

am starting to feel it a bit when I bring out the boat. Not driving so far to slipramps and have starting trying to see what's closer to home, so I can save both fuel in the vehicle and i might find a new mark that is closer to the shore, that still yields good numbers.

Not nice though , long gone are the day's when it was under the €1.00

Car pooling is the only respite. We try work it our for all our club comps.

I couldnt agree more with you, the price of fuel is defo making a difference to my fishing. I myself am unemployed, and trying to get out fishing as much as i would like isnt an option im sad to say due to the cost of petrol. If i was to do all the fishing i would like, I would want shares in TEXACO, Shell, BP, Topaz etc. On my way fishing one day i filled up in Topaz and seen a sign for, download the Topaz App for iphone with a chance of winning free fuel for a Year, so i chanced my luck, No luck yet tho, lol, Wishful thinking cause i would fish the socks out of it for a year with free fuel

This is really impacting everyone and I agree that the only solution for this is to carpool. We do not go out unless there is a minimum of 3 anglers available to share the cost of petrol, bait and food.

latest round of price increases will really curtail pleasure fishing for me, the days of just heading off when i felt like it are long gone.used to fish at least once a week.but now its really once a month for club comps,even bait digging has to carefully thought out..its depressing at times,but I'm lucky that I'm working...a modified driving style is now in order, under 90kmh,on motorways,and generally toddling about,its a pain,but all things considered..I have little to complain about. but more fishing would be nice whine over.

petrol prices is crazy,,,diesel aint much better but for longer trips you get a better value,,,the government are raking it in now,,they are loving it

theres fewer and fewer day boats out now,,,well up here in north mayo we only get a few days of good fishing day boat weather so when it comes all the boat owners are skint for 2 weeks after i cud only imagine what its like down the southeast,,,but ye will have better shore conditions than us up here and bigger bass

For the Dublin lads [admin edit] Removed business for a number of reasons[/admin] that I have seen and the scratch dont give fuel allowance, as the one in finglas is now shut by the fire chief at the old garda station have seen garages on the finglas road up as far as € 159.9...... and I do car pool when we are going down south or heading up west....

big time I drive a 2.5td 4x4, and a trip from dublin to the south wexford beaches coasts a small fortune... Id love to fish further a field, but i think if i wanted to go to dingle, id have to apply for a loan lol

Great post, i would usually travel from newry to dunany/port/clogerhead areas (80 mile round trip) or to larne/glenarm (130-150 mile round trip). So when you add your bait/ food to this its becoming an expensive day out. But i will say is that the fuel in the Republic is 15p a litre cheaper than down here but the road tax here is a lot cheaper ( i have a 2.4t petrol volvo, 250 a year tax). I usually take the missus car for fishing as its a bit more economical than mine . I think car pooling is a great idea, but trying to get maybe 3 people, 6 rods, 3 tripods and everything else into one motor might be a challenge sometimes, also with new tolls be added to some of your roads, its not getting any easier...

So when you add your bait/ food to this its becoming an expensive day out. But i will say is that the fuel in the Republic is 15p a litre cheaper than down here but the road tax here is a lot cheaper ( i have a 2.4t petrol volvo, 250 a year tax). I usually take the missus car for fishing as its a bit more economical than mine . Not feeling it very much but every good mark are well within ten fifteen miles of and it just a 1.3 diesel berlingo. I suppose I'm lucky in the sense that I live in dingle. In saying that though there's no more piking in lough allua for me.

the way i judge this is when i first got my boat i was buying petrol at 1 euro a litre in 2009 it was costing 30 euros per trip out. i havent launched the boat this season but i paid 10 euros for 5.8 litres last night so id say my costs have more than doubled in 3 years .you notice amounts when your buying in cans 20 euros in 2009 would fill 2 cans .i can put 25 euros in 1 can now

thats because we have no choice or say in the matter and until they invent a marine engine that runs on salt water i dont think it will change .if we want to go out fishing we have to pay what ever price petrol and diesel is at the time.but to go back to the question posted. i think everyone has noticed how much more our sport cost us. its very hard to justify taking monies from the family kitty.at the expense of other things, just for me to go fishing. at the momment its cheaper for me to take a charter in kilmore than go out in my own boat in howth.we all have to try and juggle our finances to get out fishing and yes i would think we have all cut back. as our sport is becoming dearer by the month

It has definitely reduced the long journeys I make. Nowdays I am more likely to fish much closer to home. A few years ago at the weekend if the conditions were right I would jump in the car early on a sunny Sunday morning and drive to Mizen or Beara Peninsulas for wrasse and pollock fishing for the day and get home close to midnight but I havn't done that for a couple of years.
Similarly I haven't done any weekends away this year - a couple of years ago I would have 4 or 5 fishing weekends to Kerry or West Cork- I havn't done that at all this year, although I do have a couple of days planned for Kerry in September.
