i was always under the impression that it was illegal for divers to take lobsters?

It is actually illegal to take them whilst scuba diving as noted here http://spearfishing.ie/irish-regulations/ but fine by breath hold.
Its kinda confusing having two websites... but the one I am linking is the official body and the one posted by the OP is just a kinda blog run by 2 individuals.
