People: Just Me

Duration: 19:30 - 22:00

Tide: Falling

Weather: Lovely!

Bait: Rag

Rigs: 3 hook flapper

Results: 2 small Pollock, 6 doggies
Headed out to see if I could end a run of blanks with a lighter less pokey beachcaster and better bait presentation, as I was sick of cleaned off hooks without a visible twitch on the rod.

There were a few other people out fishing without much success so expecting the worst I set myself up, tried keeping the rod very vertical on a sand spike and changed the way I was baiting up to rag to threading them about an inch behind the head onto the hook and hooking a second loop about 2/3 along the body rather than my normal method of threading them on via the mouth, seems to be more secure and allow for more wriggling.

Things were slow for the first 45 mins which gave time to play with my spinning rod, but then things livened up considerably, the softer tipped rod seemed to give much better bite detection which allowed me to strike rather than waiting for a fish to silently hook themselves, or maybe the head of the rag wriggling made the fish take the hook better but either way the blank spell was over!

I had one doggie that I christened Spot because he kept bringing back my Rag - same fish three times in the space of an hour!
