Red Tide, Donegal.......I think it's going!

#1 Post by lastcast »

:D I've just been down to Portnoo to have a look at the water, and I could hardly believe it, the water was gin clear! I could clearly see the bottom in about 15-20 feet of water. What a turn around! I stopped to look into a creek in the Gweebarra estuary on the way there, and the water was dirty red/brown with scum on the surface, but the open sea was back to it's clear self. Hopefully it is the same along the coast. Maybe the last remnants of the red tide remain in sheltered creeks/estuaries. It would be interesting to hear what others are finding. Let's hope it doesn't come back!

I've noticed the mulroy go from a dark red colour, it looked like a kind of gravy a few days ago and today it's clear...
sure, its not raining between the showers!

Good News, but I think the damage to the fish stocks has been done. It may be some time before those fish that moved off shore or died return. Hopefully it's the exact opposite, only time will tell

I think you're right. I went out last Thursday to St.Johns Point and I was amazed to find the water clear. Then again I went out on Saturday to the Carrick area and found the water there clear. Unfortunately I have to agree that the damage has been done as I got bugger all. I'm sure it will pick up but it might take a month or more ?

Great to hear the water is clearer around Donegal.
Might still leave it a while before i fish it again though. Dont want any more wasted trips this year.

I'm just back from St.Johns Point. The water is still clear, I had x4 'enquiries', lost one, caught x2 little ones and a 2lb Pollack. Met some guys with a 6' Blue Shark. I think things are picking up. Also saw dolphins.

Things in sligo seem to be improving aswell with waters clearing a good bit but fishing is still very slow with very little being caught for alot of effort. No Macks to speak of yet and waiting with baited breath. Alot of worm beds are destroyed (not good news) and alot of shellfish killed off. I am wondering about fishing today maybe a bit of pike or something.

Fished Buncrana pier yesterday. Was very quiet. weather was very wild so packed up and headed round to Moville where we got some macks.
Fishing seems to be good around there.
