Getting a penn525gs of a mate. He never used it and still in box.
Is there anything i need to put in or tske out as i read all this stuff and iam lost.
will it need oiled or anything.
Got a 7ht and it worked from the box.
new penn 525 is there anything i need to do before i use it

The gs has centrifugal brakes, not sure if they are fitted or if you have to remove an end plate to fit them first.
Remove the left hand end plate and this should give access to them.

Penn 525gs
Certainly on the 535 the brake blocks are not fitted when new. The 525 could be the same. Check the little plastice bag with the spanner etc. Try the reel out first and if required fit some blocks.

Hi Pookie,
Any gs' that have crossed my path never had the centrifugal brake blocks installed. For that matter they didn't even have the pins fitted to put the blocks on!
Actually, it was always just a simple case of pushing the pins into the little white plastic collar - firmly. Try not to wiggle the pins as you put them in if you need to as it weakens the plastic holder. Once in try to put the reel back together to see if you have the pins in far enough. If so then slide on a brake block to each pin, making sure they are not hanging over the end of the pins and reassemble the reel.
While you have the reel apart you could take the opportunity to add a drop of oil to each of the spool bearings and work it in a little. Put the reel back together, adjust the bearing cap so you have a slight ticking feel as you slide the spool side to side (out of gear). Add you favourite line and leader and go try it out. Don't tighten the bearing cap as it says in some manuals. It puts strain on the spool spindle and bearings. It may be alright for lure fishing and the like but has no place in beachcasting. It will kill your reel - literally
Just take the first few casts slowly and easy until you get a feel for it. Keep your casts smooth and you should be fine. Good luck mate.
