Donegal ray 4-6-12

#1 Post by MC »

People:just me

Date :4-June-2012

Venue: A bay in Donegal somewhere

Duration:7hrs

Tide:down then back up again

Weather:great, spot of rain (about 30 seconds) but sun and little wind

Bait:squid and mackerel

Rigs:pulley and pennel pulleys, 3/0 hooks

Results: 3 doggies and 4 thronies

Report:as the old saying goes "make hay while the sun shines" or as the fpo says "use your brownie points before they expire" So I had the day free, well the fpo got her lie in and i sortted the wains, at 10am i started to pack the car, kissed the family good bye and said i am off on a thronie hunt, I'll be back when i catch one or run out of bait, I did both

Anyway I am not giving too many details on this mark as it was given to me in good faith so I shall keep it that way, but its in Donegal somewhere. Once i had reach the parking spot i loaded up with my gear, taking all i needed, except waders (found a hole in them) and set off on the mile hike over rough ground, let me say this i was sweating buckets by the time i got to my spot and dropped the seatbox. Set up my first rod and wacked out a mackerel bait about 120yards, set up the second rod with the same and cast it out about 130yards, trying to reach the deeper water as the sun was shining bright. I didnt even get the shelter up when the first rod gave a rattle then a steadly pull, classic thronie bite, not big but traget species got. Followed by a doggie on the other rod, then another dog then fishing died off just before low and didnt come back until halfway into the flood, as the ray came on the feed, as i laned a 37cm, 30cm and a 39cm ray within 2hours, this was finished off by a dog. I will say this the bay is very weedy and you need strong gear to fish it and be able to cast 100yards plus to reach the drop off, this was the first time i fished here and i know high water isnt best as you get cut off, water came over top of wellies whan i had to walk around big rocks but it has left me wondering what night would be like at this mark????
