Overfishing video
Here's a video about overfishing that I think people will appreciate.
If you don't mind it'd be great if you could also send it on to as many people as you can please.
I think it's important that we all try and raise awareness of this problem.

Yours hopefully,

Re: Overfishing video
Very worrying... All you have to do is fish the Dublin coast to see the effects of it.....
Its about time people started to think pf the future, 2050 and no fish left.....
38 years, IL be 71 and wont be able to catch a fish.......

Re: Overfishing video
Pure greed once again,so long as money involved as with everything in life common sense goes out the window.
One thing though as i watched the video i kept expecting to hear of solutions to the problem of which did'nt materialise apart from a mention of getting after the politicians to help out,in which case fish of any sort long term are doomed.
I mean come on ffs scientists [who are the experts]have for years been telling the world and politicians about falling fish stocks only to have the facts and warnings thrown out the window say for a few changes in lower quotas here and there, its just not enough
Actually the more i think about things i ask myself what if ireland had not sold out on its natural resources many years ago to our big brothers in central europe, such a shame

Re: Overfishing video
A way to help is a 1 year complete ban every 3 or 4 years on fishing to allow stocks to breed and grow....

Re: Overfishing video
Lovely idea a ban for a year, but it will never happen. For a start who would compensate the commercials,or even if they were compensated how would it be done, maybe allowing an increase in quotas for intermittent years that they are fishing
.Viscious circle me thinks.

Each year put a ban on different fish?
this year cod, next year prawn, year after mackerel and so on till you circle back again.

Good point 'Buddy but I thought compensation was for people who have suffered damage, not caused it! Who will compensate us for loss of leisure and pleasure?beachbuddy wrote:Lovely idea a ban for a year, but it will never happen. For a start who would compensate the commercials,or even if they were compensated how would it be done, maybe allowing an increase in quotas for intermittent years that they are fishing.Viscious circle me thinks.

Re: Overfishing video
Could'nt agree more with you johnwest, would love if the commercial fleets would be penalised for the unscrupolous damage that has been done to "our"marine life down through the years, but its not going to happen. However in this legally bent world of ours you can be sure the commercials would be looking for and getting some form of compensation, whereas the likes of you and me would be left sailing in the wind.johnwest wrote: Good point 'Buddy but I thought compensation was for people who have suffered damage, not caused it! Re: Overfishing video
Some good points made here.
It absolutely amazes me and kind of disgusts me to think that the commercial fishermen do untold damage to the world's oceans and when they're asked to stop for a while they expect compensation!!
That is absolutely mind boggling.
As already mentioned they're doing damage and people should demand that they be stopped. And just because they're in a particular industry they should be compensated when things aren't looking too good?
They should get their social welfare like everyone else that is unemployed in this country!!!
Destroy fish stocks, destroy marine environments, get asked to stop, say no, get offered loads of money to stop exercising destructive actions - that doesn't sound like a sane process to me at all
Calm me down somebody - please!

Re: Overfishing video
So lets imagine you are self-employed as a fishing guide (not entitled to social welfare) - and you witness the destruction and then the ensuing compensation. You do your best to set and develop the best practices you can in the sector in respect of the fish constraints and environment, you are largley ignored either from a protection or promotion point of view.
Strangely what is largely ignored is the fact that its sustainable, low or zero environmental impact, creates socio and economic benefits..............
