warm mayo beach mark 26/05/12

#1 Post by saving private brian »

People:meself and a mate

Duration:10.30pm-03.30am

Tide:hw@03.30am

Weather:east wind, swinging a bit to south, back to east,vicesa/versa.after 01.30am the wind blew hard in set pieces and it was like a hot air fan beside us,freaky stuff guys

Bait:macks,sandeels

Rigs:flappers

Results:flounders(2 stuck out as 1 was 46cm,other 50cm) 1 x seatrout(42cm approx),loads of lsd's and a few beer mat sized turbots

Report:had to go back to belmullett yesterday to do some stuff and drove around to a few of the beaches.lots of them was full of weed but there was a few that wasnt.seen a quy alright with two rods on a small beach but just looked like he had only set up.had no time to chat but had an idea of what he would catch on it knowing the beach myself.with looking at all this beautiful scenery i had to get out meself as i had only a few quick sessions previously with most trout being caught.texted a mate and put a quick post up here to see if i would get company.36 views and not even a whisper.with mayo having some of the best beaches in europe and winning at least 13 blue flags every year it puzzles me why we dont have as many beach anglers as you would get in the likes of kerry/cork etc.maybe we do but there just not on here,or they are on here and saying noting  anyway me mate replied and we met up at our mark at 21.30pm to find a flat beach.we both werent happy so we agreed to another mark.left one motor there and headed in the other.go there to fing the surf rising in the outgoing tide which we predicted.we both never got anything during the outgoing tide here in the day so we werent sure bout the night.rods were just out for the dusk, hoped for a trout but noting so we settled with a can of larger and a fag and hoped for action while chatting.we werent long chatting till we got into action with the dogs and we were busy with them till after 01.00am but they then died away for a bit.after 01.30am i reeled in a flounder,in which i didnt even see him strike.its like he swallowed the bait and just sat there.well when i got him in i could see why he didnt fight too much as he was 46cms long and a lump of a thing  .we were both delighted to see something else bar dogs, then after that me mate got a nice knock then to reel in a nice trout.the humour on boths of us rose and we just kept plugging away.at about 02.45am i saw my line tighten hard in a steady solid hold so i struck a wee bit and reeled ina nother monster.a 50cm flounder with a massive thickness aswell.i think if you spreaded him out with him fins fully he was the same lenght width was as my 12 inch filleting knife.what a beast and my (pb).after that me mate picked up a few flounders and we both picked up a few beer mat sized turbos.got the turn ,the daylight was sarting to crack, the wind was blowing a hot freaky 16 degrees ,all looked good for more fish but unfortunately our minds were telling us to go home and so we did.packed up and i got in the door just after 5am

well atleast we know how to fish this beach again.two hours to the low tide and two hours of rising after the low tide.also as the tide went out further we got on to a softer sand and that told us how to fish it again as the fish were in the softer sand and would be feeding better there with the washed up sand.only the brave dogs will venture up on the the hard sand at higher water
its all new knowlegde to us but we will never know half of it.

cheers lads
