Dingle peninsula, Co Kerry 12-13/05/2012

#1 Post by FMCN »

People:me

Duration:2days

Tide:various

Weather:nice on Saturday turning to gales by Sunday

Bait:king rag mack and razor

Rigs:3/0 pullypennell and paternoster

Results:thornback ray, wrasse, and big dab?

Report:Headed down for a couple of days with the above target species on my list. Arrived down Saturday lunchtime and went to a mark in Dingle harbour to try for ray and dabs. I had a couple of ray best going 6lbs on mack and a few flatties on razor. I am not great on identification but for dabs i go on the distinct bend in the lateral line and very rough from tail to head. The biggest had both. The only reason i am doubting its ID is that it was a near 40cm fish and went 1lb 10oz and would be a very big dab, well above specimen weight. So i am open to correction. Sunday did some wrasse fishing and caught plenty of fish to near 4lb. By Sunday evening it was torrential rain and gale force winds so headed home well satisfied.

Is it a big dab or average flounder

Any more offers. Here is a good flounder i caught last year. The lateral line is almost straight past the pectoral fin. they don't look the same to me.

Would say Dab ,relatively small Head and tail and prominent bend in lateral line.

Not a problem tight lines. Glad you showed the interest anyway.

Yes it could have been a specimen as my digital lip grips showed it 1lb 10oz but that means nothing without the certification. Unfortunately the new certified scales that i bought myself hadn't arrived by the time of the trip. The certification process delayed their despatch. It was only the recent shad experience that made me think about the specimen claims. Never bothered before but at least now i will have the proper equipment.

I will have to get back down now with certified scales to try again.
