I was always told the early bird catchs the worm but in this case I caught more than that, this is a mark Ive tried over the past 2 months showing pollack up to 8lb and coallies everywhere, so I thought before exams Id make it down early and last all day while I have the chance. Weather looked perfect as well as wind so I through everything in the car including the dog which had to be wrestled back out and finally made a move. As I pulled up I noticed two guys already walking in the direction with rods in hands, a bit annoyed they had beatin me to the punch and set up exactly where I wanted to.
Lucky enough both turned out to be good guys and by lunch I was fishing between them. The day started well for them, lifting 1-2lb coallies and the odd pollack however my luck was taking a hammering so I sat for that well known break with coffee in hand, Id missed breakfast to beat people down and still fell short.

Tim using a fly rod lifted some outstanding pollack before lunch time. However with constant changes of lures I had nothing. Tim had to answer a quick call and while he was gone I hammered into a monster at some distance, I was sure hed hit the weed but I turned him just right to bring him in, the savage rod holding up well after a good fight he was close and decided to take a last ditch effort under a rock in front. I dashed to match him and feeling the braid slide along I started to panic, the other fella quickly grabbed their net and leaned out with me to land it. It must have been about 8-10lb my legs were shaking and then out of no where a dark spot came rushing towards it still in the water, I swear the biggest seal Id ever seen decided to be of with it, taking about 10yards of line before the line broke, I was nearly in but more than that my fish probably a new pb was gone. This called for another break my heart truely breaking at the sight, I could of swore it was a shark.

Around 2 oclock came, the other guys had lifted some lovely fish but Id had nothing and then finally a 2lb pollack saved my blank. The other fellas finally left leaving me to the nightmare of the seal which on the occasion reared his ugly head just to let me know he was still lurking in the depths. I thought stuff him so I set up a 5 inch sidewinder and fished through, finally out of no were I hit in and then the fish kept coming raining from around 2-5lb I was shaking all over, my arm was tired and after a long walk up the mournes yesterday my legs were starting to give way. So this was gonna be my last few chucks before home. The tide certainly coming to the low I was hammering them out when finally it came, a monster making my reel scream and arms already sore I could do nothing but hold on (constantly thinking this better not be that seal) so I reeled through maybe a little bit of bullying but I wasnt losing him, measuring 113cm give or take ( had to use my measuring rule and judge) I landed my pollack, this is a PB by any standard and probably weighed upwards of 8lb not sure but it weighed a bloody ton. That was me I was finishing up but the sun was shining so as all anglers decide enough is never enough, so I again I went throwing my lure out. Another monster bite but this was slow pulls no real energy and more of a tug than anything, by myself I landed another pb cod measuring 72cm (im judging PB by length as the biggest Ive ever caught was 50cm). After this came a few more bites and a few smaller pollack still a good size but only around 1-2lb then here it came to sum up my day, a comorant dive bombed my line tangling itself. I was thinking of cutting it of but unfortunetly this had mangled itself in line, I decided there was no chance as it constantly struggled in the line, so I did the only thing I could imagine and hand lined him in, netted him and de tangled setting him free, I think i came of worse with a few cuts down my arms for my troubles as he jumped back in and went swimming. Saying this Id do it all again haha this is by far the best day Ive ever had fishing and I feel fully deserved a report, so hopefully this is good enough.

Did i miss something. How do you know its nearby. I don't even know what County he was fishing in.


Anyway, sounds like a good days fishing and 2 PBs is good anytime especially when one is a cod on a lure, which in itself is unusual.

Feel like trying some local marks now, but already decided on Portrush mini fishing on Tuesday..

Nor do I but I'm assuming its somewhere between the Foyle and Carlingford. I'd happily travel a bit to find fishing that good.

Sorry Drew but that doesn't really work as the report doesn't actually say what day he fished on. I am all for keeping specific marks to yourself but a little bit of information is useful or else why bother.

Well I can think of 2 Specific marks at either end of the country which throw up fish of that calibre quite often, but I won't go into that one..
If you're that annoyed about the lack of specifics about the mark he was fishing maybe you could PM him and ask? He might even be good enough to tell you.

According to the lenght to weight converter it works out at 33lbs 6oz. Thats a nice fish from the shore. Some craic on light gear

He judged it at around 8lb, that's what registered with me, no doubt the man will have the pic off his Iphone in no time and we'll all be able to see just what size it is... you know.. since it means so much to you folks...
Sad to see such fish envy rising from one report, can you not just be happy for the guy for catching a PB fish??

It certainly is Red and Drew knows 2 marks which regularly throw this size of pollack up along with 7-8lb cod.

Just call me an old sceptic.

Savage report man there is some good pollock about alright. Just out of interest do you fish your jellys on a jig head or with a lead and leader down to a hook ? Something that we have been noticing lately we seem to be getting the bigger ones on the rig as opposed to the jig head. I think it might just be cause the lead gets the jelly down deeper or something not sure really ??

Well done on your PBs Gabbey, hard to beat a good days Pollack fishing!! At least we can still rely on them sizewise, and in numbers, these days and a great bonus for you with the Cod. Congrats!!

Sorry guys for those who read this report, Im only back online and you are right on calculations I wrote this after a very long day, measurement is 2 standard rules (45cm) plus 3cm which give me 93cm I do apologise but I was knackered also meaning you can drop 5cm of the cod.

This has been the second time Ive caught a cod here on a lure, last one measured just over my rule plus a bit, thats why I wrote estimated weight.

Its a Co. Down mark and I was shown this mark by a friend and swore not to give any details thats all I can give.

As stated guys I am sorry for the confusion on this one, ill maybe do reports the next day in future also the report was done as soon as I got home.

Also Darol just read your comment, I caught the pollack on 5inch sidewinder attached straight to my braid with a swivel link clip and the cod on a silver bar just like the last one. Nothing fancy just letting it sink to the bottom and slow retrieve.

I have more confidence using a ball weight and a leader of about 2 or 3 foot,find it allows the jelly 2 work more naturally plus if u get snagged all you loose is. the jelly and a hook!although self weighted shads like the sidewinder range are best fished by themselves with no additional weight,again adding weight seems 2 mess up their action!
