Boat towing and clutch damage

Almost completely burnt out clutch on Kia 4x4 bringing back my ribcraft RIB from its annual service. Thirty mile tow.
Informed by mechanic, damage was done reversing into my drive without engaging low differential gears.
Have towed boats for over 40 years and was unaware of dangers of reverse gear.
Does anyone else have any tips on towing?
