Headlamps

I have owned several headlamps over the past couple of years. Initially I used the petzl zoom and then the mega, but found these inconvenient and costly in that I was constantly buying batteries (and forgetting to buy batteries!). I then got the nightsearcher converted petzl which was nice but flimsy and I kept breaking it, so I bought the speleo anglers light, which is far more reliable.
Just recently though, I have gone back to the original petzls because, despite all the drawbacks I am just more comfortable using a self- contained unit with no wires or cables hanging off me, or cumbersome battery packs around my waist. I recently saw a speleo version with a rechargeable battery worn at the back of the headband, which would seem to be an ideal solution, but I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's got one, or seen one in action before I add one to my collection!

I bought a cheapo headlamp from a camping store which gradually died over a period of 4 hours. Not having a spare set of batteries, my fishing ended. The guy next to me had a Black Diamond Gemini II Headlamp which was so bright, I thought the moon was coming out to save me! He bought it in Germany. He had been uzing the Petzl lamps before, but found them far inferior to the Black Diamond. I should do more research and find a more local supplier! I guess I will do more night fishing to try and improve on my catch of a pouting and a colourful spiny devil scorpion fish of that night!!

I bought a "cheapo" headlight from Maplin in Dublin for less than EUR20. It has a battery pack that takes 4 D type cells, that I recharge. The light sources are a halogen bulb and a white LED. Using the LED, which is adequate for most of the time, the lamp runs forever.

I am happy out with this lamp. Why pay the extra for the brand?

You obviously boughta better "cheapo" than me! Mine only has 2 AA size batteries and stayed bright for about 1 & 1/2 to 2 hours! After that it rapidly degraded to a faint glimmer.

Never one to pay more than neccessary, I'll check out Maplins!!
