#1 Post by scotty »

Mate seen some lovely wild (not farmed) irish seatrout up for sale in the big seafood shop in howth yesterday he said they were up to 4lb and the sign said 10euro each wild irish seatrout, he knows the difference between farmed and wild, they had lovely net marks on them,(me and the mate caught 3 last week with net marks across them) he called the fisheries and they were down in 2hours and there were no fish for sale???, doesnt surprise me as the last time i was in there i seen a lobster with berries(roe) on it, and about 4year ago around october they were selling wild 5lb plus bass

Thanks for letting us know and thanks for your vigilance. They only people that are going to stand against fisheries crimes are anglers. It's up to us to report criminal activity and to educate the public on what constitutes fisheries crimes. Sometimes that same public that needs educating are the people partaking in the fisheries crime itself.

A good starting point when trying to determine a wild bass from a farmed bass is the size. I would say that anything over 2.5 to 3 pounds is a wild bass. Anyone care to advise?

most farmed bass you see is about 35 cm long ,however wild bass does come in from england but would obviosly have to be accompanied by a vat invoice ,a dna test can be done i think if their is a doubt :?
