Abu ct sports mag 6500 spool speed help !
Hi , having trouble with Abu ambasador ct sports mag 6500. Started casting with reel down low and find it a lot easier to load rod but getting a lot of birdies . Just wondering is there a way to judge the right spool speed setting ? Or is the knob on the handle side for something else ? I have worked on laying the line nice and uniform on retrieve and I have the mag brake on 4 at the min . Stopping spool when lead hit water .but sometimes it birdies before I get the chance . Is the spool turning to fast ? Casting off the ground with century carbon metel . Any tips on setting reel up properly would be much appriciated .

is it a new model or old ie. two blocks or 6 ,how many magnets are fitted?the knob on the side is to adjust your free play on the spool and nothing to do with slowing down the reel you should have a mil or two of free play when you move the spool from side to side .put the mags on full and work them off till you get a little line lift during the cast, then go back one or two clicks.all reels are slightly different so its just a matter of getting it right for you

You can also add some oil into the bearings to slow it down... if it still doing in with the magnets on full, it might have to do with your casting style

Ah I see . I thought it offered same function as bait caster reels for lure fishing for pike. That explains a lot . Thanks . Does anyone know if my casting style suits my rod ? I only got it recently . Will be practicing the pendulum soon to get the extra few yards

Just had Dave in Southside have a luck at the reel . I never fitted the centrafugical brakes . Would this help ? I might be down Wicklow way this weekend might pop in for some advice thanks

Re: Abu ct sports mag 6500 spool speed help !
use two blocks if its still happening with mags on full ,then after a few sessions go to one block ,if your doing ok do away with that too ,once your cast is smooth, mags is all youll need after a few months

Re: Abu ct sports mag 6500 spool speed help !
Seems the model of rod I got is made for fixed spools . It's the the century c.m. Sre 14ft only coped it when I picked up another c.m 13.5ft yesterday and it has more eyes on it plus they are smaller in diameter . Seems the rod or the advice worked as only one birdie today after 30 or so casts on the beach , Paced out every cast and getting between 100 and 120 paces now with 5oz lead on the multiplier .I'm lanky so one of my paces is a meter or so but Still getting further with the fixed spool. Thanks again for the help
