Anyone ever fish for SQUID?

#1 Post by TRIBAR »

Fishing out of Bangor: I fished for squid in france once, using strange squid lures. Im getting a few sent over to give them a try here. Has anyone ever fished for or catch squid in N.Ireland? Is there a season? etc.

I 've taken squid up to 3 odd pounds occasionally when jigging off Donegal in daylight with mackerel-baited coloured feathers - more of a fluke than anything else I think. About 30m down, hard on the bottom.

Also had small ones grab trolled coloured feathers at dusk on the surface.

No idea about seasons but I hear that dusk is the best time and it helps to dangle a light over the side of the boat to attract them - I think they come to the surface at night to feed???

I saw a program with Rick Stein (i think) where he went out fishing squid in a small rowing boat at night in the Autumn off the south English coast.

Try http://www.Squidfish.net the self proclaimed "world's biggest squid fishing community, or the December edition of the american "Sport Fishing" mag.
The feature "Invasion of the Red Deamons" deals with fishing for Humboldt squid, but the same tactics apply
