The Wee County, 04-02-2012
People:Me
Duration:4.5hrs
Tide:2.5 hrs up, 2hrs down
Weather: Dry, calm, only 2 degrees but didn't feel cold. Very bright with big moon.
Bait: Fresh lug, frozen mackerel
Rigs: 2 and 3 hook flappers
Results: 2 Flounder, 8 x 5b rockling and 2 small codling.
Report:
Forecast suggested there might be a bit of wave and movement in the water so I braved the rain and wind to dig a few worms (including a couple of whoppers). Just as I got enough worms for the session, the rain stopped, the sky cleared, the wind changed direction and then died away and the sea went almost flat. The moon is approaching full so it was almost bright enough to read the paper at 7.00 pm; the prospects had gone downhill with a calm sea and bright conditions. First cast produced a rather tatty looking flounder but at 25cm I wasn't complaining too much. Next cast produced a small rockling and a short while later a bigger flounder at 27cm turned up. Not bad flounder for this mark. Several more rockling followed interrupted by two small codling, bigger @ 22cm, so I don't imagine anyone will be rushing up from Youghal. In the calm conditions it was surprising to see what a rattle these small rockling can give on the rod tip. Last cast of the session produced a double of rockling making 8 in all, each a 5b model. Bearing in mind the location and less than perfect conditions I was happy enough with the catch although when the lugworms are bigger than the fish.....

Re: The Wee County, 04-02-2012
well done on getting a few fish man. we were at a donegal beach mark ourselves last nigh with much the same results. fishing was tough to say the least, but yet again the forecasters got the weather all wrong
. we avioded our chosen beach due to the 40mph gusting wind forecast only to discover the seas were calm and the winds only light
. i think the weathermen need to invest in some new crystal balls

When I'm fishing in Donegal I find the RTE weather forecast more reliable than BBC or UTV, that's if you can get RTE in Belfast. But RTE aren't perfect either.
I got 3-4 monsters but they were in one small restricted area apart from the rest. They were 2 good forkfuls down but as I pointed out in my original report, they were bigger than the fish I was catching so I might save them in future for somewhere with a bit more potential!sparkey+1 wrote:Some giant lug john well at least you got a few fish was many of the lug the same size...????
By the way, can I just point out while hoping not to offend anyone that the Wee County is Louth, I got the impression from a couple of replies that some people thought I was fishing out west.

Yes, all yummy fishies gone alright, but you were thanked on many's the Saturday evening after another fine feed! I suppose it's only the cat you have to keep fed for the rest of the year, you could have given him a good fright with that last photo.
